Morning all,

Reading about Spitfires and GT6s just now, reminded me of how various parts fell off mine many years ago while in service.

Have you ever had anything fall off your old car, while out for a spin?

RJ

Many a time Rick. Laughing Laughing One Sunday I was going to a show at Biggar when the exhaust front pipe landed on the deck. Couldnt fix it as the manifold had broken at the flange. The 1300 marinas were guilty for manifolds breaking. I managed to tie it up and drive it home but what a racket. Laughing Laughing Laughing

My MK1 Escort spat a hubcap into the atmosphere last week, does that count?

Just this week my Peugeot 406 2.0Hdi spat its alternator pulley off...

There was a huge bang, sounded like we had run over something, but nothing in rear view mirror. Stopped and lifted bonnet, and noticed a pulley resting on the front cross member.

Why does it even need a clutch type free wheeling pulley anyway!

cost £144 to get it fixed happy daze

A few years back we went to look at a Hillman 14, we took her out for a test drive and everything was ok. When we got back a deal was struck to buy her, it was at that point we noticed a hub cap missing, it was there when we set off. Needless to say a couple weeks passed and we went to pick her up and the vendor had walked the route of our test drive and found the said hubcap!

Hi
Does a gear stick coming free from it's fixings count?
I had one come out on a Viva, I think it was an HC it was held in place on the top of the gear box by some thing that resembled a biscuit tin or tea caddy lid.

I tried all ways to remove an unwanted heatshield from my Range Rover, to no avail, without apparently removing the engine, so I left it. Two days later it fell off on the road.

I've lost a wheel trim on the A40 but I honestly think that's about it!

I remember fitting a new water pump to my Bedford Beagle, The next day, as I gave it some throttle going on to the M6, the fan boss (which had not been pressed on properly at point of manufacture) flew off. It fired the fan into/and halfway through the core of the radiator. Oh was I cock-a-hoop, stranded on a slip road on a freezing November night waiting for the AA.

That sounds like my fun with the Dodge's fan blade, making a bid for freedom via the radiator core.

In terms of things falling off, or trying to, I can think of:

- rear wheel (A40 Somerset)
- exhaust (red Mk3 Spitfire)
- rear wheel nearly coming off (red Mk3 Spitfire)
- front wheel & upright (blue Mk3 Spitfire)
- rear hub and wheel (blue Mk3 Spitfire)
- torch rolling out onto the road, through gap in the floor (big Dodge)

I also lost quite a few items from inside the cab in my E83W, while negotiating a bumpy right turn and the passenger door opening itself.

A firm I used to work for had a brand new Fiat Ducato flatbed truck.
When the driver set off back to base from Wakefield he had the two flatbed sides and tailgate, but when he got back to depot in Hampshire there were only the two sides!! Shocked

I can't remember any parts falling off any of my old cars but the spare wheel of my VW Caddy fell out of it's cage onto the road one day. The retaining bolt had worked itself loose.
Luckily, it happened on a quiet country lane.

I lost my inflatable off the roof, after leaving Sands End, (Whitby). The fact I hadn't applied the devices that secured it may have contributed.

In the mid 90's the top man in our company bought a major shareholding in Marcos cars, one day he arrived in a new Mantra just collected from the factory, he got out and walked round the car tapping bits of it, I asked him if everything was alright ? Yes he replied in a surprised tone, he then told me that on collecting his new car, the factory had advised him that it was quite common for something to fall off in the first couple of trips, so best to check Shocked !!

A couple of HGV related in the early 1980's

A Scania 141 in for first service
The cab tilts via a hydraulic pump operated like a jack.
As it goes over centre the weight of the cab drops forward on it's own.
Can be a bit of a fright the first time.
There is a bolt / pin on the end of the ram and usually a stay that restricts the drop.
This time though the stay AND the bolt were missing.
Made a big bang as the cab hit the floor and the screen exploded.

Another was a trailer.
In for first MOT.
When the chassis was jacked up to check whatever, the wheels stayed on the ground, there were no nuts on the end of the U bolts, in fact the u bolts were still covered in original paint, wonder how many miles it had done like that.
