My next door neighbour has just bought an ex demonstrator Audi A6 Diesel and on tick over it sounds like an 1800 Sherpa diesel. Once its driving its fine. Is this common on these cars.?

Hi
There are quite a lot of different engines in the various A6s over the years.

I wonder if his has a form of cylinder de-activation on tickover.

I belive it is done on petrol engines by missing spark and injection at low revs from certain cylinders; no doubt it could be done on a diesel by missing injection from the same cylinders.

Hi again
You question got me wondering about hit and miss engines and I found some videos explaining how they work. I've put it in the Interesting links board.

It would seem to me that there is a conceptual link between cylinder deactivation and the hit and miss engine.
