I remember as a kid having roller skates. They were the ones with metal wheels and they tied at the front and back with a strap and buckle. They were very noisy and eventually the wheels wore away and split in the middle. Many a sore fall I got until I got used to them. Then I got a pair with the hard rubber wheels and they were great. Skateboards weren't on the go then....happy days. Did you ever have skates. Most kids did. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

1950's. We relieved the local Rag & Bone man of a pair of those metal roller skates. They were something more suited to a size 9 or 10 and wouldn't stay on. With the aid of some string and old stockings (my Dad kept them in his paint shop for straining paint), we tied them to his wellington boots.
I guess it was Christmas before we got all the bits of gravel out of our knees and elbows. |

Never had skates but did have a skate board...until I fell off and developed a huge tennis ball sized lump on my knee after falling off! Clearly remember smashing it to bits shortly after.

Another skater (retired) here. I had a pair with rubber wheels when I lived at Mablethorpe in the late '50s and somewhere have a photo of me speeding along the promenade. _________________ David

Hi PeterL
I remember the metal wheel ones having a slide action length adjuster with a wing nut underneath.
I wonder if they did different ranges like 2 to 6 and 5 to 9 (talking British sizes here of course, I don't know how shoe size is designated on your side of the pond) _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

My metal wheeled ones had jaws on the front which were tightened with a square key. Useless as the trundling worked the screw loose, they disappeared under the foot leaving them hanging by the rear strap and the wearer face down on the concrete. They were so noisy it was virtually impossible to skate anywhere without angry residents screaming at you and telling you to 'go elsewhere' |

Hi Penman. Over here it just like the UK, the size of shoe depends on the size of one's foot.

I spent a lot of Saturday mornings roller skating at the rink on Southend Pier (Essex) in the late fifties. Used to skate with various girlfriends then! It was a popular mornings entertainment and a great place to meet.
You used to take your own skates or rent rubbish from the rink. I had a great pair of hard rubber wheeled Jackos. (I think I've got the name right!)

I did some serious roller skating in the late 60's. Would go to Leeds on a Wednesday afternoon. (Girlfriends day off and I was on Nights). We did get quite good. One day we were doing the spin on the spot, with her hanging from my neck when a large gentleman, with little to no skating ability, collided with us. I ended up below the two of them and sustained a serious ankle injury that took 2 years to heal. I have never skated since. Girlfriend drove us home having never driven before and no licence. |

NEver had roller skates, but had a skateboard instead which I still have sitting in the garage. Intention was to hang it on the wall but it is still sitting under the bench!
Never got too seriously into skating though, I preferred bicycles. |
