Thank you for your kind comments about the old "Lag" - I may give the pics a tint too. |

I see it's been a while since I posted on here but in my defence I moved house last year which meant the Lagonda was in storage for a long time. Treble garage now so I have no excuses however she's away again...
Back end of last summer I attended the Brooklands Reunion, a great event and it coincided with re-opening the old finishing straight and unveiling a reconstruction of the race leader display board. As part of the fun we were invited to take part in mock race starts and of course I couldn't resist! Below is a favourite picture of me in the Lagonda alongside a 1928 Delage. I think I won but unfortunately the differential didn't take too kindly to it and has had to be repaired. Parts for 85 year old Lagondas aren't so prevalent and a doner diff’ has been renovated and fitted. I'm just waiting for a few other bits to be completed now and she'll be back with me just in time for the rain to start!

Incidentally, I wasn't always breaking it by doing drag starts up the Brooklands finish straight. I did replace the black Bosch horns (which I thought were rather ugly) with some shiny Lucas Windtones. These look far better on a car such as the Lagonda.

Kevin | Thank you Kevin, she's good fun, not fast but fun. Looking forward to getting her back from the specialists. I had to have a new prop-shaft too because the theory is that the one in it was too long by about an inch so there was no free play longitudinally. This was probably jamming the prop up against the gearbox at one end and the diff at the other, hence the break. |

I see I haven't updated this thread for a few years, what with lockdown I suppose. Anyway, the car needed some new tyres, the old ones had plenty of tread but were 15 years old and I don't like driving on old rubber, especially on a vintage cars where the contact patch is small. I decided upon Michelin DR (Double Rivet). The get excellent reviews and I like the tread pattern (Blockleys are a bit 'Bentley Boy')- expensive but they really transformed the feel of the car.
While the wheels and tyres were off I had the wheels restored by Tudor Wheels in the New Forest, Hampshire. Richard Skinner did a great job and we decided to change the colour to deep red. Finally I had the brake drums shot blasted to get rid of years of paint and have left them as bare metal. All part of slowly improving the car where I can.

I have also made a new rear number plate mount. The old one was made from a massive piece of aluminium plate which I always found rather ugly. I had a local metal workshop make me something much more discrete and in keeping with the lines of the car. I'm very happy with the result.

Back in September I took the lads (son and son-in-law) to Goodwood Revival in the Lagonda. To avoid traffic jams we set off at about 6:30am to arrive around 8am. Despite the hot summer we had I warned them that it would be cold with the roof off, especially in the back. My suggestion to wear a hat and coat went unheeded and so we were in need of a hot cup of coffee on arrival. It was great fun and a day to remember.

These vintage/post-vintage era Lagondas are some of my favourite cars of all time. I guess a starring role in ITV's Poirot (Captain Hastings car) and BBC's Campion, with Peter Davison driving an earlier model from about 1929/1930, had their influence. I have to make do with a 1932 two-seater Morris Minor, but I love the little open box on wheels. _________________ 1989 2CV

An old friend of mine used to work for Lagonda making the mudguards and other panels by hand. No presses in those days. Sadly he passed away a couple of years ago.
Have you converted your "D" tail lights to LEDs to reduce the risk of some clown running into the back of you? If not you can buy kits from Classic Dynamo and Regulator Conversions which fit the lights perfectly and are much brighter than the originals. see their website at www.dynamoregulatorconversions.com |
