I do a reasonable amount of work in the kitchen..........and I'm not too bad
However I'm getting really p****. Sorry "frustrated" with tin openers....the new ones just don't work any more! Or for more than half a dozen tins , I don't want a fancy electric one, just a simple opener.
Can (no pun intended!) anyone recommend one?
Cheers

They are crap - we have bought and taken back loads that do not work at all price ranges for years and sometimes use the old Stab/cut version - got a 1960's wall can opener and that is perfect. Just need a strong wall/door frame to fit.
Its astounding that in the UK the birthplace of the industrial revolution that we can no longer make a can opener that actually works.
Even more astounding is that well into 21c the big manufacturers still actually sell food in cans that were designed in Victorian times when cheaper (foreign) brands have the easy ring pulls _________________ Rover P2

That's what 35 years or so of continual Tory government has done for Britain. I know they were pretending not to be Tories for a while, but doubt anyone was fooled in the end...

I'm not convinced by ring pulls either, I'm afraid. I can't get into those without using a screwdriver to lever the ring up to get hold of it, the removed lid has far sharper edges than a "proper" can ever had, and they leave a nasty sharp edge around the top of the open can which cuts your wooden spoons about and stops the contents coming out easily. Welcome to the modern world, where the only things that don't suck are the vacuum cleaners... |

Actually the Unions and the Labour party destroyed our manufacturing industry. That's something that practically all historians agree on now.
However the Conservatives have done some decidedly moronic things over the years like messing about with HP rules to control spending and so bankrupt our consumer electronics industry. They couldn't cope with massive demand followed by none.
FWIW it was Mrs Thatcher who said "Governments do very little well and an awful lot badly, so the less they interfere the better" |

| I caught a little bit of a T.V. programme recently and they said during the Wilson government in the sixties early seventies 70% of jobs in British manufacturing were lost. I didn't see all the programme so I could be taking things a little out of context |

I was a Personnel Manager back then and the manufacturing firm I worked for reduced staffing from 6500 to 1000 on that site, as well as closing several other factories. I was the poor muggins who had to calculate all those redundancy payments (no computers to help) Heartbreaking to tell some guys who had worked for the company for 40+ years they were no longer required |

History, as always, has been written by the victors.
While I have no love for either the Labour party or the unions, and freely agree that Britain has been in a state of industrial decline for much more than the last 35 years, it's worth noting that the last time we had both a proper Labour government (i.e. before the curse of Thatcher) and strong unions, you could buy a can opener that worked first time every time and lasted for years. As far as our original topic is concerned, I still blame the Tories. |

Is there an explanation for why the cans of Cat Food have ring pull lids but food for humans has not ?
I doubt that a cat would be capable of opening a ring pull can. |
