Some you may remember a topic I posted in January this year about a grey Austin A30 which had been around my area for many, many years, from the early 1960s until the end of the 1980s.
Later in the thread I mentioned a 1959 Austin A40 which has been owned by the same person since the late 1960s. He was the chief mechanic at the local BMC/BL dealership and had bought it direct from his employer after it had been part exchanged at the dealership.

It was in regular use for many years and kept in pristine condition but the last time I saw it on the road was in the late 1980s.

Interestingly the A40, SDM 828, first registered in February 1959 has resurfaced.

The A40 has just been bought by a young apprentice mechanic when the long term owner decided as the result of age and infirmity to finally part with the car.

It is still in quite good condition and as you can see it's new owner has already invested in a set of wider steel wheels. If this is how he is going to enjoy the A40 then so be it.

He will have some work ahead of him because the front wings are showing signs of deterioration and I suspect the cost of new or better condition items is going to be substantial. The engine is no longer the original 948 cc unit (although he has been given it) but an ex Morris Minor 1098cc.

It's nice to see an old survivor back on the roads and reassuring to know that older classics appeal to young enthusiasts.

Great to see it, quite an early Mk1 with the Flying A badge on the bonnet and the small domed numberplate light

I think the 1098 unit is entirely appropriate because it was also used in the MK11. I salvaged one such for my A30 and with some modifications provided very useful performance.
