... so that you can't have a flick through them before deciding to buy.
I have one magazine subscription, other titles I buy infrequently, whenever something inside catches my eye.
Octane, December's issue, was one I wanted to flick through before buying, but I couldn't because it was bagged up. Plus it was £6.99 as it came with a mag about Aston Martin that was of no interest. So I left it (them) on the shelf.
I also wanted to have a nosey at Heritage Commercials, but again it was bagged up with an insignificant "free gift", a few postcards iirc. So I didn't buy it either.
Why do magazine sellers do this? do they assume that we all buy their publications every month, religiously, without having a quick shufty first?

I agree with you 100% - I have a sub even though its more often on shelf before I get mine but may buy others if I leaf through. Will not bother otherwise.
I think it is a way of stopping people reading the whole mag without buying it

Yes it is, but as a longtime observer of such things I've noticed it generally doesn't last too long. I suspect that stopping people leafing through the mags for too many issues actually leads to a fall in sales, otherwise they'd all do it all the time. It can't be the cost of the bags, after all. |

If one trusts the editorial , then buy it and take the rough with the smooth, there will always be copies that interest more than others. At the end if the day £6.99 is less than a couple of pints!

I don't much like magazine (online included), they peddle nostalgia, cynically try to push up prices and endorse advertisers. Most are more old wives tales than fact, except for the Automobile, which is friendly, contains lots of useful information including well researched historical fact. If it covers cars that interest you, it's the best IMO.
Trawling through drivel on the Internet (this forum for example) often yields some interesting nuggets too. |

They usually have a stand at the NEC show selling the current issue for a pound, if that's of any use to you.
If it had the freebie Aston Martin magazine, that'll be why it was bagged - easiest way to make sure the freebie doesn't go missing or you forget to pick it up or whatever. |

Of course, another reason for bagging up magazines is to stop you shaking out all the junk leaflets you don't want and leaving them in the shop... Our local Asda were sensible about this a few years ago, and provided a clearly labelled bin in the aisle for unwanted leaflets, but it didn't last long - no doubt the publishers / distributors nobbled the idea. |

If you're at Asda in Brynmawr it's probably me! The people I hate are the security guards who lurk around while I'm reading, who haven't got the bottle to say anything about it...  |

Don't think I've ever been to ASDA, BB. Morrisons Ebbw Vale for us, as I can buy LPG there as well, but I still get worried going into that OTHER VALLEY! |

I once bought a magazine called Big Ones for a chap who was too embarrassed to buy it. It didn't come in a plastic bag, but I would recommend it to an enemy.  |
