Hi all, have tax due at the end of this month but no reminder as yet. I asked at the post office and yes, they can tax it off the V5 no problem, but have they decided to stop sending reminders with the new system to save money and, of course, rake in the fines? I wouldn't be surprised... |

As far as I know reminders are still being sent, although I wouldn't rely on receiving one

I think they might have stopped paper reminders. I got an e-mail reminder for my wife's Mini in November, I assume because I had always taxed the car online, but it went into my Junk box and got 'flushed' before I got around to doing anything. Without the reference number that the mail contained I found that I couldn't then tax the car on-line. I tried using the V5C reference number and it didn't recognize that. So I wrote to DVLA and enclosed the V5C asking for a replacement. It transpires that I should have had a red replacement V5C sent to me 2 years ago. If they did, we didn't get it. They said they would send a replacement a week ago...........Still waiting.

I had a reminder through the post last month and did do for all or vehicles last year.
With the HMRC one now has the option to receive all correspondence via email rather than by post, they do make it clear that it's your responsibility to ensure their emails dont end up in junk folders and that if you change email addresses you notify them.

If you are taxing a pre-1960 vehicle at a Post office, and do not have an MOT, you will also need to produce an exemption form. You can pick this up at the Post office, and fill it in for them to view, they may not ask but there are no guarantees. _________________ KA

No worries on that score, Ka, it's only a boring modern. Does mean I'll have to hand over a wedge of folding stuff though |

Taxed it today off the V5, but no sign of a reminder yet. Apparently the local post office has had lots of people taxing this week who haven't had reminders, so it isn't just me. I don't think I prompted it in any way, but the PO staff are also of the opinion that it's a DVLA dodge to hand out more fines... |

BB, I spoke to a couple of our IT contractors who are engaged with the DVLA:
Firstly all reminders are still issued by post, if you are not getting one then:
You are not the keeper on the V5C
You have just bought the vehicle
You have a local problem with post office delivery of letters ( which given your comments sound like the problem)
There is no other reason
You currently can not opt out for electronic notification, and no one in the DVLA benefits from fines there is a 3 -5 day period where upto 20,000 notifications per hour are issued each month.
The clear advise was that if you have not revived a reminder to contact the DVLA, asap...

I'm definitely the keeper on the V5, and have been since last May. Had no problem with the reminder 6 months ago - done it for a year this time, but wanted the tax falling away from the MOT in August.
The letter post has been bloody awful since privatisation, not that it was brilliant before. Letters taking a couple of weeks to cover 5 miles - including going to the sorting office - is not a particularly uncommon occurence, but by the sound of it they're managing to simply lose quite a lot. Of course, we could have an illiterate postie who's hiding or destroying the stuff he can't manage to deliver, that's happened before now. Oddly enough though parcels come through the system no bother
I don't imagine any one person in the DVLA does benefit from fines being issued - but the government which set up, owns and controls the DVLA most assuredly will |

Hi
I had a problem recently with the driver licencing side, in particular the medical branch.
Post age 70 I have retained my acquired rights categories by having the vocational medical rather than self certifying.
The forms were sent off in early November for a Jan 6th expiry, unfortunately my doctor missed a tick box and the form was returned for completion arriving with me on 25th Jan but dated 15th and franked 22nd. this letter had a 21 day response requirement.
I wrotye to the CEO Oliver Morley and received a reply from the customer complaint response team.
The relevant para re the mailing problem is as follows:-
Quote: | I apologise for the time taken for our request dated 15 January to be sent to you. It would appear that there was a delay in mail being forwarded to our Mail Despatch section. Please be assured that this matter has been brought to the attention of the relevant section to ensure that mail is fowarded to our Mail Despatch section promptly. Thank you for
bringing this matter to our attention. i |
