Apart from the colour and possibly their age, they look the same to me!
I now await a quick RR / Bentley education

The Bentley T type is the better looking although both cars are identical but the grill. Only a few hundred were made out of 30,000 Shadows of which most have probably been crushed by angry, frustrated and bankrupt owners.
They're seriously horrible to drive, do 8-11mpg, cost about £2500 a year to park on the drive and consume front tyres at an alarming rate. My wife refused to drive ours because it was lethal on roundabouts. It rolls and slides at speeds a MK 1 Escort on crossplies would be safe at.
There is a Harvey Bailey Handling kit for them, which puts them on a par with a Turbo R, but they're so troublesome. I think mine broke down every time I used it.
They're lovely looking, home made and not a patch on Mercs of the time.

Totally agree on the rust problem. They may have been beautifully put together, and very luxurious, but they were still made tin!
But of the two, I prefer the Bentley. |

Personally I would not want either. But if I did I would look at which holds its value better or is more likely to appreciate. |

They're pretty much worthless at the moment, but the rarer Bentley is more desirable.
Mine is the best car R-R made. The MKVI is more reliable and far better to drive. They're astonishingly good today. |

You keep teasing me with that MkV1, Ashley!
I tried to interest the good lady wife and showed her that photo of your car but she just dismissed it as "boring". What's a chap supposed to do?
As it happens, Ashley, my Dad (who knew a thing or two about cars) would be in complete agreement with you. He loved them. Unfortunately, when he would have had one of his own, they were, understandably, rather expensive! |

Say you were in the market for a Shadow, or an earlier model, would you be more likely to hunt down a R-R or Bentley-badged example?

Ashley has convinced me that RR and Bentleys of this era are not a good buy.
The Bentley above in my opinion is best of the bunch for looks. Incidentally, it is a MPW (Mulliner Park Ward) 2 door saloon. |

Years ago, a retired Colonel owned a local hotel here and his car, for years, was a grey Bentley Mark V1 which he changed in the mid 1960s for a Bentley Series 1 or 2, in silver. He retained his own registration number PNE 100.
Newly arrived and parked in front the hotel I remarked something to the effect of "beautiful car a Rolls Royce".
"Rolls Royce be damned! A Rolls Royce is a cad's or wide boy's car. That's a Bentley and a Bentley is a gentleman's car!"
Suitably admonished, I did not forget the distinction between the two
A former neighbour had a maroon and grey Bentley T Series followed by a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Mk 1. This was in the early 1980s and I remember him showing me the invoice for a brake overhaul on the Bentley - £800 even then.
He later bought a Rolls Royce Silver Spirit which proved to be the biggest money pit he had ever bought.
I'm not a cad or a wide boy, I hope, so in the unlikely event of my buying one of these it would be the Bentley. _________________ Starting Handle Expert
