Tollerton, just to the South of Nottingham, has a very popular small airfield, a former RAF field with notable history during WW2 when occupied by USAF forces. It is now under threat of closure due to some quite dodgy land dealing that has gone on, and an attempt to build anything up to 4000 new tacky box houses. The airfield is still very much active with flight training, as a base for Air Ambulance refuelling, and for many private small aircraft. Moreover, it is a popular liesure spot for local people and a green space with extensive wildlife diversity. It has incorrectly been classified as a "brownfield" site, which should not apply as this classification should be for derelict or unused land, suitable for designation in local housing allocation.
Whilst at present, it is only at the planning stage, and a big campaign is being launched to stop it, there are fears this could be steamrollered through and Tollerton, a lovely community village, would lose its heart and become just another part of the ever increasing conurbation of Nottingham.
So, we are trying to show it is a much loved popular venue and are attempting to start a local monthly, or bi-monthly classic car meet at the airfield on Sunday mornings, starting on 19th May. There is a great little cafe on site, "Chocks Away" where you can get breakfast or a coffee and, of course, you can see plenty of ariel activity there, often including some historic aircraft. There is a huge car park alongside the main runway. Admission is free. So, we are appealing for people of the East Midlands to come along and support us, to spread the word and garner greater support in our fight to retain this facility.
If you are able to get there, put it in your diary. We'd love to see plenty of people turn out on the day and if successful it could become a regular event. Some history and info in links:

Haven't looked at all the links, but there appears to be fair sized hospital on site as well. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.9204235,-1.0825151,774m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en-GB&entry=ttu

I don't have an answer for it, but this country seems to have plenty of housing. We constantly hear about a "housing crisis" but in my opinion a "population crisis" would be a more apt description.

...and still they come in their hundreds of thousands.... Rolling Eyes

I've put the date in my diary, and all being well I'll be there. What sort of time - 9.30-10.00?

Penman, yes, the hospital is a Bupa private one, built on what used to be hangar space but some time ago. The fear is we loose the rest of it.
Mike, yeah about 10.30 would be fine.
If it starts too early it might put some people off.

4000 new homes crammed in and straight away the whole nature and history of the place is gone...

Woodford Cheshire Avro's main airfield went the same way. British Aerospace wanted to realise the capital for years. It is set in a beautiful place with great views of the Penines and more. Now being covered in a mass of modern houses.
I believe they did the same with Hatfield home of De Havilland and other airfields.
The accountants are to blame, more money in selling to developers than making aircraft. That's why the British aircraft industry died!

They did, our HQ is on the old Hatfield Airfield. The only original building remining is now Hatfield Police station, that does have a museum telling the history of the de Havilland Aircraft Company.
