The Series 1 Appia was a regular entry in the Mille Miglia:
... and the Saxon was a popular vehicle for motor polo - does that count?
I doubt if the Austin Seven saloon saw much competition use, though |

A similar car to mine was raced with some success by Gerry Marshall back in the seventies. "Old Nail" as it became known is still around, this is a shot from 2014 and it was in action at the Donington Historic Festival the year before that.
The actual car is based on an earlier flat-fronted version of the Firenza, you can see a superb tribute to its earlier incarnation to the right of the real thing in the photo. |

The Volvo PV544 was and still is rallied, most famously by Joginder Singh in the sixties. It still is a favourite in Historic and Endurance Rally circles.

I remember seeing the Hillman Hunter that won the London to Sydney Rally. It was "on show " at a shopping center on the Gold Coast, Queensland. The dash had been ripped out and was looking a bit of a mess. It was in a roped off corner.
Because of this feat, my mother bought a new one. After some time the throttle cable broke, she had a loan of my LWB Landrover to get to work across the Harbour Bridge. My mother was always happy with gears and a clutch .
I often wonder what happened to this car ? Any body know ? |

While going to college in California during the mid 60's I ran this 1964 steel sunroof bug VW in autocrosses and hill climbs. Always 2nd or 3rd in class beat most of the other VW just could not beat the Minis.
We ran many rallies'. I got tired of my navigator always leaning on me while we were hard cornering so I removed the passenger seat and had him sit in the back seat that worked out better for both of us.
I had the dash and space below the rear window covered in dash plaques.
The 5 Lucas Flamethrowers taxed the 6v system so I had the regulator tweeked and ran a 8v tractor battery. Great times
cheers

Morgan Threewheeler racing alive and kicking as the MTWC hold championship rounds of Road racing, straight line sprinting, twisty sprints, hill climbs and Night rally.
Plus Morgans are regular competitors with the VSCC, and VMCC through their racing arm BHR. _________________ KA

There are various replicas around and one was used in a fairly high profile charity rally in 2010.
The original, I believe, was acquired a few years ago by the motor museum in Duns, up in the Borders, but I have no idea what state it is in, or whether it is exhibited.
I had a 1725 Hunter back in the day and it was a really nice car. A shame that it has become almost a forgotten piece of motoring heritage. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

For some time now I have been collecting information on my late Dad's MG M Type shown here competing in 1950 at the Bisley VSCC rally. He owned the MG until the late 1950's and was the first car I ever went in. According to MMM Register records by 1980 UW 5990 was in the ownership of a John Butt however all attempts to contact him have failed to get a response.
The car has chassis number 2M 0715 a build date of 17th September 1929 and was a red two seater. By 1980 it had been restored and was featured in Thoroughbred and Classic Car magazine representing the model in the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Abingdon. In a move that I shall always consider a national disgrace, the closure of Abingdon was announced the very next day.
The DVLA have no records of UW 5990 but at least if the number is not on another car there is a reasonable chance that the MG has not been scrapped. Also, if the car was in good condition in 1980 another possibility is that it has gone abroad. Then again, it could be laid up in a garage or barn just waiting to be discovered!
If anyone has any information regarding the M Type I would be very glad to hear from them.[img][/img] [img][/img] |
