Hi All,

I have started looking for a Light 11 here in Portugal.

I'd like to read up about them and the pitfalls .... can anyone recommend a book to help as a buyer's guide?

Thankfully, corrosion should not be a big issue here.

Cheers.

Good choice! I love them, there used to be a specialist restorer about mile from here, but he's retired now.

I know of no books but if you join Facebook there's a huge Citroen Portugal group that's very active, so I'm sure they'd help. As I understand it the gearbox and crown wheel and pinion are weak as are the driveshafts. The local chap used to fit modified Range Rover shafts and charge £1000 to sort the box.

Best of luck, I hope you find one and love it.

Good choice!
I have emailed a Practical Classic review via PM. Very easy to maintain and parts are widely available as is advice!

Don't buy the first one you see...and join one of the clubs. Still many available in various states of repair!

Hi
Have a look at this, it gives a quick potted history as well.

http://www.classicandperformancecar.com/citroen/traction/5015/citroen-traction-avant-buying-guide-and-review-1934-1957

It is worth joining the Traction Owners Club which has a lot of international members and is associated with various European clubs. There is also a lot of knowledge via their database of technical articles and a members forum.

Citroen Traction Avant by Jon Pressnell is a useful book and also has a buyers guide as well as being a detailed history of the car.

Look in all the usual places for corrosion, as well as in the jambons, which are the forward chassis members that support the engine and the front suspension. Parts are widely available from specialists in Europe, as well as via the club. It is also worth investing in a couple of the more specialist tools for removing hubs, etc.
Are you looking for a project or something that is restored and ready to go?
Mine is a South African import, made in the UK in 1953, so it has been around a bit and I am just about to treat it to a new clutch.

I've browsed several on line here in Portugal; some are "fully restored" others as is. I don't want a restored one, I'd prefer a runner to fettle myself, I think.

As long as it is free from serious rot.

French website Leboncoin usually has a lot of cars on it, in various states of repair. You'd obviously have to retrieve it from France, which would mean a long drive/trailer, and a bit of an adventure.

Thanks for that.

France is surely the best bet but I don't know if I could face legalising another car here in Portugal; I have a car legalised by professionals but the Authorities made mistakes which we are trying to unwind..... however, price might rule.

I found several here on line without much effort so will try here first.

Haven't got the cash yet!

Cheers.

Do it - and join a local club, because there are one or two tricks to mechanicing them that club member will know about - and have the tools to preform the task.

Plus you will get to go on outings with locals, and see things that incomers are never told about
