Hi all,

Having recently received a fresh tin of Waxoyl as a gift, got me thinking about certain smells that often meet with approval from motoring types.

What are your favourite smells that relate to the old-car world? Are there any?

Indeed so - have you discovered GT85 lubricant spray yet? that has a certain je ne sais quoi about it too.

Wet dog in my Range Rover!
Like the rest of my generation, Castrol R of course, and latterly WD 40, but us old 'uns must remember the smell of the air expelled when you remove a tyre valve? And battery acid when you removed the caps to top up with distilled water.

The gorgeous smell of leather after the car has been left closed for a couple of weeks.

Like others, Castrol R was the first smell to come to mind, hotly (!) pursued by the smell of mud on a hot exhaust - familiar to all trialists Wink

All old unibody Jaguars seem to smell the same, the same applies to Morris 1000s but of course it's a different aroma.

BMC Farinas have their own unique smells and old Land Rovers, well, just smell.

I remember walking past lines of parked cars here in the village in summers in the 1960s and will never forget the smell of often old engines cooling down - a mixture of heated electric circuits, oil and age.

Modern cars don't have the same odour.

Two vehicles immediately spring to mind , first the CA Bedford ( rattle'y bumper Bedford )always had a certain smell , and I can still smell the peculiar smell of the Mk 1 Transit. Quite why certain vehicles have there own smell is unknown to me but I am glad do.

Yes they do, don't they? I forgot about the smell of my dad's new Volkswagen when I was a boy. It still had the same smell when he changed it 6 years later.
