Hi all,

Velology - the collecting of old tax discs. Do you collect them? did you keep the final disc(s) that applied to your old and/or modern car?

Yes, I have always kept the expired tax discs of my vehicles, old or modern.

In the case of the modern, presenting photocopies of all bills, the originals of old MOTs and the correct manuals, handbooks and even sales brochures combined with all the tax discs marks you out as a fastidious owner when it comes to part exchanging time.
Motor traders love it as they can sell on a car with provenance much quicker.

I do however view the buying of replica tax discs for old vehicles and adding details of your classic on to them retrospectively with suspicion.

Ooops that makes me a suspicious type Smile - although I don't buy repro discs to put in my vehicles, I just find an image online, save a copy, doctor it, save it, and print one off to go in the windscreen. Latest was a "1952" disc for the Moggy. Close up it doesn't fool anyone, but it looks the part from a few paces away IMO Smile

I started collecting as a nipper. I think I have some back into the 1940s and selection thereafter.

I was a little saddened at the demise of the tax disc two years ago now. It may only have been a round piece of paper but it had a serial number and details of your car on it. It added something tangible to vehicle ownership, classic or modern.

Believe it or not, I actually now keep the DVLA road fund licence reminders that arrive in the Post. It's the only reminder of the tax disc past..

I understand that Road Tax Duty (VED) evasion is at a higher level than ever before. Police vehicles have ANPR which can "spot" an evader but there are fewer Police vehicles on the road now which leaves enforcement to the DVLA.

Mark my words, VED will be abolished and the revenue will be recovered by increasing fuel duty.
There will be an annual small "administration charge" but that like all government levies will increase surreptitiously.........................

It may well be that adding a duty to fuel is a fairer way of taxing heavy road users, but it will be hard lines to those of us didn't pay VED anyway.

I wouldn't be too sure about the demise of VED. There are two problems with simply adding it to existing taxation on fuel;

1. They won't be able to fine anyone for late payment or technical infractions of the SORN rules, and

2. It will reduce bureaucracy, and when has any government willingly reduced bureaucracy?

I think that distinct VED in one form or another will be around for a long time to come.

We have kept all our Tax discs from our cars and lorries, I never liked to pass them on when we got rid of a vehicle.

Another issue with adding an amount to fuel is the impact on the haulage industry. I did have it explained to me some time ago, but I don't recall the details.

I foresee a big hike in VED for diesel cars in coming years. The only thing stopping it happening now is the Government's embarrassment at having encouraged more motorists to go diesel in the interests of fuel economy, etc. The green element would like to see them chased off the road.

A few years ago when tax disks were still required I had taken my Morris Two Seater to the event in Glamis. I have a reproduction '38 disk and put this on the windscreen for display purposes at the rally. I forgot to remove it for the run home. It was a hot day and on the outskirts of Glasgow I stopped at a corner shop for a cold drink.
When I came out the shop I was a little taken aback to see a Police patrol car behind the Morris with two policemen examining the car. I was relieved to find that they were simply curious and wanted to see the car up close.
Eventually, one noticed the reproduction disc and remarked in a mock serious manner that my Road Tax was 70 years out of date!

Apparently the demise of the tax disk has seen a huge rise in the number of untaxed or with no MOT (and presumably no insurance) and/or cars on SORN being used as daily drivers. A recent crack down near me netted four in less than a mile.

Further to my comment above. A friend has a car parked opposite his house which is in daily use but has been SORN for the last six months. The DVLA informed him a while back after neighbours reported it a few times that "They do not have the resources or finances to act on such reports"
