Hi Everyone, I have some photos of my grandad's taxi vehicles from the 1920s and 30s and would like to get information on the make and model of them if possible. There are 2 older pics of the same car, however not much of the car is really visible and it may be impossible to identify it accurately. The other
photo shows the car in profile head on so that the number plate is visible - FK2227. I have only identified the FK as registered in Worcester which is where he lived and worked. His name was William Smith, known as Taxi Bill, and was popular amongst bookies at the racetrack from my mother's accounts. Her memory was that the newer vehicle was a Daimler, but it has been suggested it could be a Vauxhall.
I'd be pleased to get further information, hopefully an identity from the number plate, and hopefully to know if this car still exists. Looking forward to some replies, Keith Manning.

Judging by the six bonnet louvres I would think it is a 30/98. |

Hi Keith,
Welcome to the forum.
I suspect that your mother was right about one car being a Daimler but I think it was the older one rather than the younger.
The bonnet shape in your second photo is quite distinctive and I think this might be a Daimler. Although not the same landaulette coachwork here is a 1911 25hp Daimler with similar bonnet sides.
Peter

I agree with the ids above: Edwardian Daimler and Vintage Vauxhall - but I think the latter is more likely to be a 23/60 than a 30/98, Ray. _________________ in the garage: 1938 Talbot Ten Airline

On reflection I think you are more likely to be right. The four cylinder 4 litre would have been a better choice for a taxi and there were many more 23/60s built (5x I think) than the bigger engined cars and they were just as well equipped. What a lovely car. |

Thanks to all who have replied to my query - absolutely delighted to get so much information from such knowledgeable people. And if the older vehicle was the Daimler it makes sense that my grandad then built a caravan on the chassis - I will dig out the photos and post next time. Love your web site! |

Further to my thanks, above, how is it possible to find out if FK2227 still exists, or get other records of its ownership history? |

A quick look on the DVLA site doesn't show a Vauxhall of that registration still in existence. It may still be around, re-registered or perhaps abroad, but the chances are slim I think.

FK was a Worcester series

The Kithead Trust, which maintains a record of surviving early registration information, suggests that there are Worcester records available so it may be worth asking them to establish what still survives.

Worcester County vehicle registration records are held (I believe) at 'The Hive' in Worcester City…… it is a sort of Library cum Records Office…... |

If you're still in need of any information, I can ask taxi author/historian Bill Munro. He's a friend and a member of my automotive book group on Facebook. |
