To run alongside the London Classic Car Show ...

-----
GREEN LIGHT FOR NEW LONDON HISTORIC MOTORSPORT SHOW IN FEBRUARY 2017

• Historic motorsport is given its own pre-season event
• New show will run alongside the existing London Classic Car Show
• Eminent speakers at new Historic Motorsport Conference
• Motor Racing Legends announced as first organisers and promoters
• Some 100 competition cars for sale

Brand Events, the company behind a raft of successful motoring events including CarFest, Top Gear Live and the recent IGNITION Festival of Motoring has developed a dynamic new international Conference and Exhibition in London to champion and celebrate historic motorsport.

Reflecting the UK’s leading role in the world of historic motorsport and rallying, Historic Motorsport International will be a platform for engineering and preparation experts, event organisers, promoters and suppliers.

Special features include the inaugural Historic Motorsport Conference. Hosted by broadcaster and journalist Henry Hope-Frost, the ticketed conference will examine a wide variety of topics including the use of current technology in classic race and rally cars, driving standards and sponsorship.

There will be up to 100 competition cars for sale from leading specialist dealers while other exhibitors will include motorsport clubs, governing bodies, officials, sponsors and media owners.

An impressive number of high-profile companies and organisations have already jumped at the opportunity afforded by this new, far-reaching international showcase set right in the heart of London. These include renowned competition car sales specialists such as Taylor & Crawley and Duncan Hamilton & Co; premier championship organisers including Motor Racing Legends and the Classic Sports Car Club plus Dunlop Motorsport, the official distributor for Dunlop historic racing tyres. Octane, the UK’s leading quality monthly magazine covering the world’s greatest classic and performance cars from both road and track, is also supporting the show alongside Historic Racing Technology, which brings a unique perspective to the business of restoring, preparing and maintaining historic competition cars with in-depth technical articles on the engineering and craftsmanship behind this growing industry.

Historic Motorsport International will be held alongside another motoring exhibition from Brand Events, the London Classic Car Show, now in its third year and looking to build on the record 33,000 visitors who visited the 2016 event.

They will be held at ExCeL London, on 23-26 February, with access to both shows included in the entry price. Historic Motorsport International will open its doors at 10am on Thursday 23 February, while the London Classic Car Show will burst into life at 3pm that afternoon.

"Historic Motorsport International will feature many of the most iconic historic competition cars for sale and blend the business-to-business, competitor and enthusiast aspects of the buoyant historic motorsport scene, from classic Formula Ford and historic rallying through to period Formula One, GTs, Sportscars and Prototypes,” said show director Ian France. “Whether your interest is in the many fiercely competitive UK domestic championships or marquee events such as Silverstone Classic, Spa Six Hours or the Historic Ypres Rally, this exciting new event will reflect your tastes and opportunities to get closer to the sport.”

“HMI will market all aspects of historic motorsport on behalf of competitors, preparers, event organisers and promoters, specialist retailers and enthusiasts.”

Tickets to Historic Motorsport International 2017 are now available from the show website – historicmotorsportinternational.co.uk – and start at £24 for single adult entry (£27 on the door on the day).

Interesting that they've picked that name, as Race Retro was originally called the International Historic Motorsport Show if I recall correctly.

Ouch, I did wonder about RR when I saw that this new event was taking place in February. Unfortunate.

• The UK’s leading organiser of historic motor racing joins HMI
• Club’s stand will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Formula Ford
• Historic Motorsport Conference set to discuss controversial topics

Celebrating its status as the UK’s premier organiser of historic race meetings and championships, the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) has confirmed it will have a major presence at Historic Motorsport International (HMI), the important new exhibition and conference to be held at London’s ExCeL centre from 23-26 February 2017.

With more than 50 years of experience behind it – the HSCC was founded in 1966 – the club runs no fewer than 16 top-line historic motor racing championships and series, with an International FIA Series for Historic Formula 2 as well as championships for Classic Formula 3, Historic Formula Ford and Historic Touring Cars. It also organises 13 Race Meetings throughout the UK every year.

These include the world’s largest motor racing event, the Silverstone Classic boasting more than 1,100 entries each year, as well as a number of other important historic motor racing festivals and races including the Brands Hatch Historic Superprix, the Oulton Park Gold Cup and the popular Croft Nostalgia Meeting.

Its stand at HMI will feature a number of cars from its diverse championship portfolio including a mighty Formula 5000, a DFV engined Lola Sports Racing Car from its Pre 80 Endurance Series as well as an iconic single seater from the Historic Formula Ford championship in celebration of the Formula’s 50th anniversary in 2017. A number of F1 champions, including Emerson Fittipaldi, Ayrton Senna and Jenson Button, were Formula Ford graduates.

Grahame White, CEO of the HSCCC, said: “For the past five decades we have been at the forefront of historic motor racing in the UK as a pioneer and an innovator. We are delighted to be part of a new show dedicated to ‘our’ sport and we are equally pleased that HMI is to be held in the capital where it will introduce a wider audience to the pleasures of historic motor racing.”

The HSCC is just one of a number of organisations involved in the growing historic motorsport industry that will be exhibiting at HMI. Others include a number of further competition organisers – Motor Racing Legends, Classic Sports Car Club, Equipe GTS and U2TC – as well as specialists such as Dunlop Motorsport and competition car sales experts Taylor & Crawley and Duncan Hamilton & Co. In total there will be more than 100 competition cars offered for sale at the show.

Unique event features include the inaugural Historic Motorsport Conference. Hosted by broadcaster and journalist Henry Hope-Frost, the ticketed conference will examine a wide variety of controversial topics including the use of modern technology in classic race and rally cars, driving standards and sponsorship.

HMI is staged by Brand Events, the company behind a raft of successful motoring events including CarFest, Top Gear Live and the recent IGNITION Festival of Motoring. It will be held alongside another motoring exhibition from Brand Events, the London Classic Car Show, now in its third year and looking to build on the record 33,000 visitors who visited the 2016 event.

They will be held at ExCeL London, on 23-26 February, with access to both shows included in the entry price. Historic Motorsport International will open its doors at 10am on Thursday 23 February, while the London Classic Car Show will burst into life at 3pm that afternoon.

GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS AT HMI FOR THE COSWORTH DFV – F1’S GOLDEN ENGINE.

• Grand Prix’s most successful engine feted at new show
• Cosworth to display the DFV and some of the cars it powered
• Historic Motorsport International marks start of 2017 classic season
• Show aimed at competitors, officials and enthusiasts alike
• Tickets on sale now also give entry to London Classic Car Show

On a bright summer’s day in June 1967, the combined genius of Colin Chapman, Jim Clark, Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth changed the course of Formula 1 racing when Clark drove his Lotus 49 to a resounding win in the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.

It was the first outing not only for the Chapman-designed Lotus but, significantly, also for the Ford Cosworth DFV engine that powered it.

The DFV, standing for Double Four-Valve, was a 3.0-litre V8 racing engine developed by COStin and DuckWORTH’s Cosworth company and funded by Ford. An instant success, the engine went on to dominate Grand Prix racing for the remainder of the 1960s, through the entire 1970s and into the 1980s.

Between 1967 and 1985, the DFV won 155 Grands Prix from 262 races. Its last win came at the 1983 Detroit Grand Prix when Michele Alboreto took the honours in a Tyrrell while at the 1985 Austrian Grand Prix Martin Brundle, also in a Tyrrell, became the last man to race the DFV in F1.

In various forms, this remarkable engine also enjoyed success in sports car racing, including a win at Le Mans, and also formed the foundation of the ultra-competitive F3000 single-seat series.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of that 1967 debut win, Cosworth will be showing not only a DFV but also a number of the cars it powered in a special display at Historic Motorsport International (HMI).

A brand new show dedicated to historic motorsport in all its forms, HMI will be held at ExCeL London from 23-26 February and is aimed at anyone with an interest in classic racing and rallying.

“Cosworth was founded in 1958 and initially operated solely in the motor racing world. Today we remain the market leader in the development and supply of electronics to the global motorsports market and we are also actively involved in the drive towards connected, autonomous road vehicles and intelligent mobility.

“But there is no doubting the significant role played by the DFV in our story and we are delighted to be able to celebrate this achievement at HMI,” said Bruce Wood, Managing Director – Powertrain, Cosworth.

“Anyone watching motor racing from the 1960s onwards will be aware of the place the DFV has in motorsport history. During the 1970s, for example, every car on the F1 grid, bar the Ferrari, was powered by a DFV. We are honoured that Cosworth has chosen HMI to launch the 50th anniversary celebrations of this highly significant British engineering achievement,” said HMI said show director Ian France.

HMI promises a feast of motorsport nostalgia for everyone. Historic Formula 1 will be represented not just by Cosworth, but also by FORCE who will be showing cars from the 1990s, while the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) will be celebrating another golden anniversary, this time marking the 1967 launch of Formula Ford.

HMI will also have stands and displays from organising bodies, suppliers, preparation experts and specialist dealers – more than 100 classic competition cars will be offered for sale at the show. Other features include the inaugural Historic Motorsport Conference, which will examine a number of topics central to historic motor sport.

• HMI is staged by Brand Events, the company behind a raft of successful motoring events including CarFest, Top Gear Live and the recent IGNITION Festival of Motoring.

PACKED GRID OF HISTORIC RACE AND RALLY ORGANISERS LINE UP AT
NEW LONDON SHOW.

• Practical help and advice available to all visitors to Historic Motorsport International
• Clubs and promoters ready to welcome new and existing competitors ahead of 2017 season
• Full calendars of events from ten leading series and event organisers
• Entry tickets also give access to The London Classic Car Show

Are you involved in historic motorsport in 2017 or want to be? If so, a visit to Historic Motorsport International (HMI) is an absolute must.

For among the exhibitors at this brand new event are virtually every motorsport club running historic racing and rallying events in the UK and Europe over the coming season.

Whether you want to race an historic Formula 1 or Group C endurance car, rally a thoroughbred British sports car or simply enjoy some weekend sport in your own classic road car, a trip to HMI will provide all the information a would-be driver, navigator, marshal or even spectator needs for an exciting season ahead.

Already announced at HMI (23-26 February, ExCeL, London) are the Historic Sports Car Club – organiser of the world’s largest motor racing event, the Silverstone Classic – Motor Racing Legends, and the Historic European Formula One Race Car Entrants, better known as FORCE.

They will now be joined by a wide variety of other series and event organisers including French-based Peter Auto which runs a number of championships including the Heritage Touring Cup and the Classic Endurance Racing series; the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association; Masters Historic Racing; Historic Motor Racing News which runs U2TC for Under 2-litre Touring Cars and Pre-1963 GT for classic sports cars; Equipe GTS; the Endurance Rally Association, which runs epic long distance rallies such as the Peking to Paris; and the Classic Sports Car Club.

“It is a tribute to the high regard in which HMI is held – even though this is its first year – that we have attracted the cream of the clubs that make historic motorsport happen in this country and Europe. Anyone interested in taking part in historic motorsport, in whatever capacity, simply has to be at HMI towards the end of February to have all their questions answered,” said Ian France, Show Director.

The Classic Sports Car Club, for example, is the UK promoter for the Spa 3 Hours as well as running the Advantage Motorsport Future Classics series for 1970s and 1980s models. The Club will have an immaculate racing Porsche 911 on its stand (photo bottom left).

“We are looking forward to being part of this exciting new show in London. It appears to be the perfect environment for the Classic Sports Car Club to engage with existing members face-to-face pre season as well as new enthusiasts in motorsport whether to race, marshal or spectate,” explained David Smitheram, Director CSCC.

Peter Auto, meanwhile, will have a Group C endurance racer on its stand as well as an historic Formula 2 car ahead of a new-for-2017 championship. “We are very excited to be a part of the show,” said Pierre-Antoine Lecoutour. “As well as the cars, our stands will be manned by a team from our Clubs Department who will promote and discuss our events with visitors, clubs and tour operators.”

Carol Spagg, organiser of the U2TC and pre ’63 GT championships and managing director of Historic Motor Racing News, said: “We have always thought that historic motorsport needed its own venue to show its wares and meet and discuss common interests. HMI ticks all the boxes as its London location makes it easier for our international participants to attend while Brand Events’ track record in producing high-class and engaging exhibitions seems to make it the ideal partner to organise such a show.”

HMI promises something for everyone with an interest in historic motorsport, competitors and spectators alike. The show will mark several significant anniversaries, including 50 years of Formula Ford and the Ford DFV Grand Prix engine and 60 years of Crosslé, the race car manufacturer which put Nigel Mansell on the road to success.

Meanwhile, the Historic Motorsport Conference Programme, a public forum on Thursday and Friday, will examine a wide variety of topics including scrutineering and eligibility, the challenges for organisers and promoters and the landscape of historic rallying.

• Historic Motorsport International will be held alongside The London Classic Car Show, now in its third year and looking to build on the record 33,000 visitors who visited the 2016 event. Both shows are staged by Brand Events, the company behind a raft of successful motoring events including CarFest, Top Gear Live and the recent IGNITION Festival of Motoring.

HMI and LCCS will be held at ExCeL London, on 23-26 February, with access to both shows included in the entry price. Historic Motorsport International will open its doors at 12.00pm on Thursday 23 February, while The London Classic Car Show will burst into life at 3pm that afternoon.

MANSELL’S FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP RACE CAR – AND A BRAND NEW CROSSLÉ – MAKE TRACKS FOR HMI.

• Nigel Mansell’s title-winning Crosslé Formula Ford represented at show
• Crosslé celebrates 60 Years with display of milestone race car designs
• Global launch of new single-seater Crosslé blending iconic lines with modern appeal
• Entry tickets to HMI also give access to London Classic Car Show

A Formula Ford single-seater, as raced by Nigel Mansell as he set out on the path to F1 and IndyCar stardom, will form the centrepiece of a special display at Historic Motorsport International.

A revered Crosslé 32F in the colours which took Mansell to 27 race wins and a 1977 British Formula Ford Championship will take pride of place on the Crosslé stand as the company celebrates 60 years of race car manufacture.

Founded in 1957 in Northern Ireland, Crosslé Car Company is the world’s longest-standing constructor of customer racing cars with almost 1,000 built to date. This year – 2017 – marks 60 years since the late Dr. John Crosslé MBE built and raced his first car, and HMI provides the perfect place to celebrate.

At HMI the company will display significant cars from its past, including some of the prettiest sports racing and Formula single-seaters from the sixties and seventies, alongside archive material from their days in top-level competition.

The real excitement, however, will accompany the global launch of a new Crosslé for 2017. Inspired by iconic designs from the late sixties and developed for the Classic Racing School in France, the new single-seater blends period lines with modern convenience to appeal to a whole new world of historic motorsport enthusiasts.

Since 2012, the Crosslé Car Company has been owned by Paul McMorran. However the founding family is still actively involved with Caroline Crosslé as a director. Said McMorran: “Historic Motorsport International is the perfect event to celebrate our 60th anniversary and the special place Crosslé holds in global motorsport. HMI also provides the ideal platform to launch a new Crosslé that targets an unexplored niche in Historic Motorsport and fits perfectly with the ethos of this show. The new car represents a new direction for Crosslé that I think will generate a great deal of interest among show visitors, with simple logistics and an attractive price tag.”

Special features at the show also include the HSCC celebration marking 50 years of Formula Ford while Cosworth will be celebrating the golden anniversary of its all-conquering Cosworth DFV F1 engine.

An open forum on Thursday and Friday, the Historic Motorsport Conference Programme – hosted in the show’s Supagard Theatre by motorsport broadcaster Henry Hope-Frost – will debate a wide variety of topics including Scrutineering & Eligibility, Driving Standards & Safety and the Promotion & Marketing of historic motorsport, with many leading names and contributors set to be announced in January 2017.

Historic Motorsport International will be held alongside the London Classic Car Show, now in its third year and looking to build on the record 33,000 visitors who visited the 2016 event.

COYS PUTS THE HAMMER DOWN AT HMI.

• Historic race and rally cars to be sold at at HMI auction
• Competition prepared cars ready for the season ahead
• Others cars to be auctioned include classic sports cars
• Free viewing of all auction lots, but auction attendance by catalogue

Specialist classic car auction house, Coys, will be staging a significant sale at Historic Motorsport International (23-26 February at London ExCeL) when several historically important race and rally cars will come under the hammer.

The 25-car strong auction will comprise 15 competition-ready race and rally machines, five road-going racers and five sporting road-going classics. They will be presented in an inspiring display on the show floor throughout the four days adding yet another exciting dimension to the eagerly-anticipated show.

Viewing will be open to all visitors on Thursday and Friday (23 and 24 February) but access to the auction itself – which is due to start at 3pm on Saturday, 25 February – will be restricted to registered attendees who have purchased the official auction catalogue, either in advance or at Historic Motorsport International.

Free access to the lots will be reinstated after the auction on Saturday and all day Sunday.

“We are expecting many of the visitors to Historic Motorsport International to be competitors and teams who are either already involved in historic motor racing and rallying or who are would-be competitors interested in finding out more about this immensely active side of motorsport,” said Ian France, Show Director.

“The chance to buy a fully prepared historic race or rally car from the Coys Auction will be hugely tempting for a driver or team looking for the perfect start to the 2017 historic motorsport season ahead.”

Although in only its first year, the levels of interest in HMI have greatly exceeded the organiser’s expectations. Stand space at the packed show has been taken by the major historic motorsport event and championship organisers in the UK and Europe, as well as by leadingengineering and preparation companies and specialist competition car dealers, and teams.

Special displays will celebrate 50 years of both Formula Ford and the all-conquering Ford DFV F1 engine and there’s a thrilling showcase underlining the breadth of historic machinery that will be taking part in the Silverstone Classic festival in July.

Another major attraction will be the first Historic Motorsport Conference Programme. It will be hosted in the show’s Supagard Theatre by motorsport broadcaster Henry Hope-Frost and will include engaging interviews with many of the sport’s top names including legendary Le Mans winners Jürgen Barth, Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx and Emanuele Pirro. They will be joined by a number of respected experts from the world of historic motorsport who will be debating a wide variety of key topics including Scrutineering and Eligibility, Driving Standards and Safety as well as the Promotion and Marketing of historic racing and rallying events.

HMI will be officially opened by Jacky Ickx – the man who is regarded by many to be the world’s greatest all-round racing driver – at 12 noon on Thursday, 23 February. It will be held alongside The London Classic Car Show, now in its third year and looking to build on the record 33,000 visitors who visited the 2016 event.

Both shows are staged by Brand Events, the company behind a raft of successful motoring events including CarFest, Top Gear Live and the new IGNITION Festival of Motoring.

HMI and LCCS will be held at ExCeL London, on 23-26 February, with access to both shows included in the entry price. Historic Motorsport International will open its doors at 12.00pm on Thursday 23 February, while The London Classic Car Show will burst into life at 3pm that afternoon.
