I am not particularly a steam enthusiast , although I do like a good steam locomotive, and the presence of a live, operating Flying Scotsman only just up the road in East Lancs was too good to miss, so we took off yesterday morning to try and track her down. It was a fine and bitterly cold day with an icy wind, and we initially found a group of people on a bridge at a place aptly named Ashen Bottom, waiting for the locomotive to pass by. After almost an hour in the freezing cold she obliged, approaching tender first down the valley in a massive cloud of steam.
Wanting to get a little closer, we then took ourselves off to Ramsbottom station, a couple of miles up the line, and had the double pleasure of seeing the City of Wells waiting at one platform, whilst the Flying Scotsman passed through on the opposite platform.
I last saw the Scotsman at Steamtown in Carnforth in the early nineties, (whatever happened to Steamtown, incidentally) and she was a great sight yesterday, albeit a bit sombre in her wartime matt black. I look forward to seeing her in her green livery later in the year.

I wonder why they decided not to use LNER livery and to fit those nasty smoke deflectors?

I think that the LNER livery comes later this year, there was a piece somewhere about the people commissioned to paint her. Don't know about the smoke deflectors, but Wikipedia suggests the following:
"a later option was to re-install the double Kylchap chimney and German smoke deflectors that it carried at the end of its career in the 1960s, which encouraged more complete combustion, a factor in dealing with smoke pollution and fires caused by spark throwing". _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

As with all restorations, the idea is to get them as accurate as possible! The Flying Scotsman has many inherited features from its many years in service and it would be largely inaccurate to portray it in apple green with these features in place - heck, it is an A3 loco now and I think it was an A1 for all the time it was in LNER green. It did wear those smoke deflectors when in service so it is just being shown in one of its many previous guises (as closely as possible!).
I, for one, think it wears the late BR 'look' very well and can't wait to see it finally painted in Deep Bronze Green. Oh, and those smoke deflectors are very good at helping you see where you are going!!
Colours seem to upset rail enthusiasts more than anything else I have seen and this has to be one of the most divisive moves from the NRM but I think it is a welcome change! |

I agree about not mixing period features but the restoration was far from trivial and they could have replaced the Kylchap, double funnel and deflectors.

Its possible that the smoke deflectors etc. are a practical consideration for a locomotive that is intended to operate on modern main line trains. Embankments are not maintained as they were, to minimise fires caused by sparks and I recall from my youth that even then, embankment fires in dry summers were not uncommon. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

I think the Kylchap double blast pipe and chimney exhausts with their lower pressure than the original gave rise to the need for deflectors.

That is indeed the case, from my understanding.
The smokebox and saddle for certain are 'new' components so it makes little sense to change them, especially when you factor in the cost of a new blastpipe and chimney as well (not sure if the museum still have the chimney and blastpipe, or indeed if they are useable).
It's nice to see it in another guise in my opinion, as it's a big part of its history - it was 60103 for a good 15 years or so afterall (although yes, it did only have deflectors for a short period). |

Its back again, and in more recognisable colours this time.
We went to Rawtenstall station on Thursday morning, in time to see the Scotsman hauling a passenger train, crammed with enthusiasts, who then flooded the station to watch the locomotive run around to the other end to run the train back to Bury, tender first.
This is a great preserved railway and certainly pushes all the buttons for me in terms of my memories of childhood trips on the train, and makes me think of my grandfather, who was a driver on the old LMS. Worth a visit if you are in the area.
