|
|
Whilst tinkering in the workshop this morning I was listening to BBC Radio 2. Ken Bruce was on and mentioned starting handles. I thought this was odd but then got to wondering when did they cease to be supplied with new cars.
Presuming none are so equipped nowadays which car had the distinction of being the last car to be sold with a starting handle. When did they finish production?
Any ideas? |

I think I'm correct in saying that the Ford Escort Mark One was the last production vehicle that Ford added the provision for a starting handle.
Did the very last of the Morris Minors, van, saloon, estate or pick up have them when production ended in 1971?
Land Rover Series 3 were still fitted with starting handle apertures and handles until production finished in 1985.
Renault 4 and 6 certainly had starting handle perhaps with Renault 4 right to the end in 1992. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

| I had always thought the Hillman Imp was the last car with a starting handle but, having read these posts , I am not so sure. |

Hi
There is possibly 2 different questions here.
Which was the last vehicle designed to have a starting handle, if it was a short lived model, it might not be the last model sold with one. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

'57/'58 - my father & a neighbour both had very similar Hillman Minxes.
Dad's had a starting handle, the hole in the bumper & the 'dog' on the crankshaft.
Neighbour only had the 'dog' - no handle, no hole! _________________ Mike - MVPeters at comcast.net

I suspect the Imp may have been the last British car to be launched with the facility to use a starting handle (I don't think they were supplied with one though), but I think later cars had the hole in the bumper deleted, possibly before the Morris Minor was withdrawn ( I think all Minors had the starting handle hole).
But the Lada introduced in 1970 had a starting handle supplied in the tool kit, and it wouldn't surprise me if other Eastern block cars of the seventies also had handles.
