No idea on the mystery wire I'm afraid, can you find a brown wire at the other end of that loom? That might give you a clue......
For the time being I would just tape it up to make it safe. |

From the looks of the end fitting, that [red?] wire looks to have been attached to a bolt or screw fitment?
Possibly a 'live' feed from the nearby solenoid, to something which requires power only when the ignition is switched on,perhaps?
Heater fan, or radio, or something like that?
If, of course the other end links directly to an item, the wire could possibly be an earth wire, meant to be secured to a nearby part of the bodywork?
Maybe worth finding a wiring diagram, and seeing what it's colour may actually refer to? {For example, all 'earths' may be the same colour?]
Have you tried, by way of experiment, attaching a 'live' feed to it [maybe a PP9 battery?], to see what comes alive inside the cab?
Of course, wiring looms were[for mass production,] often universal.
Were there ''deluxe'' versions of the J4 at the time this one was made? |

Drove it across the road today to a local garage on the trading estate... they had a look at the required welding but think it's not really their field... they are an exhaust specialist though so I asked if they could repair (doubtful), replace the exhaust or make a new one... after a bit of thought and head scratching he went to the back of the storage area and came out with a pattern Morris exhaust off the shelf that was the perfect fit, a bit of rust and a thick coating of dust but £40 - fitted, I was amazed... !! BUT then, when I backed it off the pit, it broke down ... first half mile round trip and it broke down, unbelievable... turned out to be the fuel filter absolutely choked, so whipped a new one on and off we go... back home now for the next phase _________________ HC Viva, J4 van, Ariel NH350, BSA M20 |

As for the mystery wire... it's brown/red and doesn't carry a voltage, not sure I feel inclined to shove 12v up it to see what happens, so I'll just tape it over until I find out any different ... checked the wiring diagrammes but no clues there... plus everything electrical seems to work already - amazingly - so it can't be that important... in theory !! _________________ HC Viva, J4 van, Ariel NH350, BSA M20 |

It may have been for Ignition assist on Diesel versions. |

Well, on to the wipers next, the only electrical thing that wasn't really working... especially concerned due to the face I have big holes in the roof where the motor is mounted, so not really sure what to find. Access is easy enough though, just dropped the header panel off and there we are...
Doesn't look too bad so far... lots of daylight / weather showing through though !! _________________ HC Viva, J4 van, Ariel NH350, BSA M20 |

Motor was lacking any signs of life in the van... so on the bench to see what it looked like.
Motor looked clean enough, certainly not the corroded lump I might have expected.
And the mechanism didn't look too bad either... nice and clean with fresh looking grease;

So... in the absence of being able to see anything obviously wrong I cleaned it up, bit of light rust on the armature but nothing serious... moved the mechanism off the limit switch (not sure if this did any good or not) and re-fitted to test...
Hey presto... 2 speed wipers, working and parking properly
The arms and blades not looking quite so good though, so new ones of those required, the tension spring has broken on one arm and the blades permanently banana shaped with chunks out of the rubbers. It has black blades fitted but I'll try and find some stainless I think to match the arms, I guess that would be more like original.
And then on to the onerous task of the welding !!!! _________________ HC Viva, J4 van, Ariel NH350, BSA M20 |

It's worth while cleaning out all that grease in the wiper motor, and reapplying with new, it tends to harden with age,
I know that mine in the Peugeot D4B was, and also in the Landy.... keep up the good work

Also apply plenty of grease to the rack cable as you re-insert it, and a drop of light oil on the wiper spindles doesn't hurt either. |

Not been much to report on this for the last month... electrics working, exhaust fitted, brakes and clutch all done, wipers sorted... drives well enough...
Have got one more brake pipe I probably need to change but really waiting on the welding now... way too much for me I decided so I'm entrusting it to Custom Classics in Barry S Wales;

Due to be collected 18th March... but looks like he's capable of some super work... then of course the cosmetic fun begins !! _________________ HC Viva, J4 van, Ariel NH350, BSA M20 |

Quick update, all been quiet for a long time... van despatched last April for welding work but not started due to many reasons, including making new patterns as there's lots of metal still there on my van so it's great apparently to get near original copies from (he has another one to do)... anyway, panels all made now, should start going back together again from next week
Hoping to target getting it back again in March... _________________ HC Viva, J4 van, Ariel NH350, BSA M20 |
