In 1966 this was my very first brand new car. (Two weeks ago I took delivery of my second brand new car). As soon as the warranty had expired I bought a MGB stage 3 tuning kit from Downton along with a 'bunch of bananas' exhaust manifold and oil cooler kit. A fantastic car let down only by low gearing.

My 1800s handled like a big Mini, loads of internal room in a shortish package, brilliant bit of kit for driving around the Yorkshire Dales in. Mine was a late one so it didn't have the umbrella handbrake under the dashboard. |

One of those has been my daily driver for the past 10 years. Great comfortable, economical and reliable machines. Mine has the umbrella handbrake under the dash. Middle (old?)age spread means the seatbelt is a tad tighter than it used to be when leaning forward, but I wouldn't change it.
She is currently undergoing some TLC with a landcrab specialist! |

A Wolseley 18/85 Mark 2 was my first car in August 1976.
It was an August 1969 registered example in Blue Royale, JFF 900H, and bought new by my late father.
It was always happier running on 5 star petrol. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

These Landcrabs never appealed to me. Not pretty enough and a stark interior. Who needs a limousine sized interior without wood and leather?
Have to say I do appreciate them a bit more now though, because at the time BMC had the courage to do differently. Something which almost does not exist anymore in modern cars. _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

For wood and leather try the Wolseley 18/85. |

Just the one of these passed through my hands. In the mid 70's, a red Wolseley Six Auto. Just for a matter of weeks whilst I did my 'Wheeler Dealer' act on it. Save for the oil leaks it was a delightful thing to own, hard to imagine anything more comfortable to drive or ride in.
The only other one in my acquaintance belonged to a near neighbor of my mother, amateur rally driver Des Tilley. He entered it in the London - Sydney marathon, sponsored by Vantona Everwear it looked much like the car in the heading picture although I remember it white with matt black bonnet. AIRC he was a finisher too! Minilites, Roo Bar and tyres on the roof made for a pretty impressive lift to school for the Tilley boys! |

I've not said anything, as everyone knows I'm biased - I love them, own them, restore them, cook up up-dated parts for them and run a forum for the other thousands of fanatical followers. Well, a few hundred.
They're big yet small, reasonably fast, pretty economical, well handling and a magnificent ride.
Better stop - could go on for a long time......

I ran one on private hire for a year or so. Very popular with both customers and drivers, when compared with the run of the mill Cortinas and Marinas. |
