Well, at least I think it is a car part. It is photographed by the present owner of a Triumph Roadster (1948). The car has been taken apart and there are many boxes of parts. This part I cannot place - what would be its function?

Tomorrow evening I probably know more as I will have a look at the car in the afternoon. The story is that the current owner got the car when he was 18, in the mid sixties, then after a few months took it apart to "improve it" .... and it stood ever since. It looks very promising, and a lot of work to put it bring it back together again. Then chase worldwide for missing parts, probably.
