Here is a link to a RTE archive 1971 about the standard of car servicing offered in Dublin.
Seems to be poor!
Five experts put three cars (Vw Beetle, Fiat & a Capri) through the mill at fifteen Dublin garages over a period of one week.

I was working in a garage in 1971 and from what I remember, there were time pressures on mechanics just as there are today. I always tried to complete a service to the manufacturers requirements but the boss would sometimes come over and make a sarcastic comment about how long it was taking and get me started on something else before I had quite finished.
The jobs I hated most were petrol tanks. It didn't seem to matter what precautions one took, inevitably one went home stinking of petrol. Some jobs like this - and others like exhausts - often took longer than you thought they would, so I have some sympathy with the guy doing the work when perhaps he has the boss breathing down his neck. |
