During the MOT of my Merc this morning, the computer at the testing station failed half way through. Tester phoned and a new machine will be sent in due course. He says my car is still logged on to the testing system and it will have to go back as soon as the new computer arrives so the test can be completed and before he can test another vehicle. Interestingly he didn't know if the old test is cancelled on log on of the vehicle or when a certificate is issued. According to DVLA website car is still tested until 27th May. Let's hope that is the case
Meanwhile 8 other drivers will turn up today and will be disappointed to be turned away.

The new MOT slip is rubbish in my opinion, the one I got recently for my modern looked like it had been photocopied. When I questioned it the chap said the printer was playing up and the faint areas didn't matter as long as the details were eligible.
I liked the old style MOT certs as they were noticeable and you couldn't mistake them for any old printed piece of paper. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

The bit of paper you get now doesn't really matter, as long as it's on the central database there's no need for them to provide anything other than a receipt. I'm sure at some point this'll turn into a till-receipt style printout, though it could easily go the other way - a decent printer could easily produce an exact facsimile of the old-style coloured certificates.
For me, the old ones were great because when you went to collect a car after test, you'd wait in the office looking at all the certificates awaiting collection, not being able to read any details (if your eyesight is anything like mine) and hoping against hope that when the chap comes to talk to you, he goes for a green one and not a red one. Now they all look the same, that little spark of excitement has gone away. |

At the mot for my singer last year, the computer froze thus not allowing the mot cert to be printed, the tester said it would be on the system and that he would email it.
It was only last week when I was checking the retest date that I realised he hadn't sent it through! Hope the pic is fixed in a few weeks.

Progress? Well, at least nowadays one can go online and examine past MoT tests for any given vehicle [providing one has the registration number?]?
Which must be a right pain for all those dealers, eBay sellers, and whatever?
But is extremely useful to a potential buyer in sorting out the ''wheat from t' chaff?''
So now, a professionally [?] cleaned car in a photograph doesn't 'wash' any more, when the MoT history [including advisories, etc] going back donkey's....can be studied for suspect [ie, usual?] faults?
Yup, that's progress...with nowhere to hide now. |

Yes, that can bring up some quite surprising results: I looked up some cars that I know a while ago, one of which gets trailered to rallies quite regularly hadn't been MOT'd for three years and from the mileage, readings between MOTs it's pretty obvious that many classic cars get hardly any use on the roads. |

The BiB are not forgiving about this now either. Two years ago I was pulled over and when he got out of the car he was already spouting the caution. My MOT was three days out of date. No chance to produce in seven days as they used to.I would check the position of your car on the DVLA site if in doubt. |
