I was at a show this weekend and got talking to a guy who had recently had a car stolen. He claimed that there is a new dodge being perpetrated by the "neer-do-wells". They buy a cheap magnetic tracking devices wander the show until they spot motors that they fancy then deploy the tracker. The hapless owner drives home and the tracker tells the scunmbag exactly where to collect it from. Is this apocryphal? or is it something to watch out for?

It's said to have happened at the Ford Fair at Silverstone last year and there are photos circulating of the tracking device. AFAIK no other incidents have been reported.

It's certainly possible technically and so I would say definitely one to watch out for. Have a check round for alien devices before leaving the showground and if you find one - and get the chance - stick it onto the truck that comes to collect the portaloos... Smile

There was a spate of expensive bicycle thefts a while back after people had been racing at the local cyclo park. We believe it was done the same way, as some people lived too far from the park to have been followed home.

Where would you hide a tracker on a bicycle? Surely you'd need to insert it into the frame for it to be invisible?

Sometimes, such deviousness isn't necessary, a Jeep was stolen from a show at Duxford a year or two back simply by being started and driven out the gate.

I suspect they stuck the tracker on the vehicle the bike was loaded on to.

Thanks for the comments. I think the message is be vigilant. It is our hobby, if you spot anything going on that you are not sure about - no matter whose motor is involved, don't just ignore it. At the very least take a picture of the motor in question, being sure to include the scumbag!

We were followed home from a show a few years ago, my Wife sussed them and led them a wild goose-chase, eventually up a cul-de-sac, they realised they were rumbled and took off as there was clearly no legitimate reason for them to be there. We reported it to the Police with full descriptions, car, reg. no. and so on but never found out who it was Rolling Eyes
This would have been before the days of tracking devices, nor that we are the most vigilant but you do need to keep your wits about you.

haha, think about it how would they hide a tracker on the bikes when folk were either riding them or putting them in the cars. They actually caught the scumbag as there is a camera at the entrance and they checked all the reg numbers against those riding at the park.

I live in an area where I don't need to transport my bike by car to where I like to ride so the idea hadn't occurred to me, hence my initial bewilderment.

That reminds me of something that happened to me years ago. I was working security in Caerphilly, using my Herald to travel there and back and parking in the works compound. Towards the end of a dayshift I noticed someone looking "sus", lurking in a car outside the compound. Made a note of it and informed my relief, but on leaving site this car pulled out straight behind me and seemed to be following. A short pointless journey around Caerphilly town centre confirmed this, so instead of going straight home I set course for Newport - think I must have been a cabby there in a previous life - where I managed to lose them in the back streets. I'd not long started the security job and at the time took them to be jokecentre narks checking up on me, but now I wonder if they had their eyes on the car.
