|
|
Hello,
I have a Healey 100 that needs new kingpins. I have the parts but not a reaming tool. During a routing search of youtube I discovered a chap who used a drill mounted honing tool to enlarge the bush instead of a reamer. Does anybody know if this is a viable route forward? This is the type of thing:
https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/draper-56244-25mm-57mm-cylinder-hone/
Alternatively, are there places I could borrow the relevant tool from to do this job? (I live in north London).
Regards

I know this tool as a "Glaze buster". Used to' bust the glaze' on cylinder walls before fitting a piston with new rings.
I think it may work. Cheers, Tony. _________________ It may work in practice, but not necessarily in theory! |

You may find that new king pin reamears are available for your Healey, they are for MGB's around £120.
Otherwise most folk use an adjustable reamer with a pilot.

I think you need a pilot or the bushes will not be aligned and will wear very quickly. As Dave says, an adjustable reamer is the usual route. These appear from time to time on eBay. |

The hone that you identified is very much larger than any king pin bush. As already stated it is for honing engine bores perhaps 2 or 3" diameter.
You need a pilot reamer to get correct alignment of the upper and lower bushes.

Above is an example of what's available.
Adjustable reamers can be had much cheaper elsewhere, however, I found only the makers stocked the appropriate pilots.
The bushes may be the split sort. If using an adjustable reamer, then only make tiny adjustments until done. |

Steve,
The hone you have shown is for wheel cylinder refurbishing. I doubt it you would get the required finish using that. A bodge....yes.

I've been a bit of a donut. Having read the first few comments I went and did some more research and found that I hadn't done the most obvious bit of hunting. I looked at the Ahead 4 Healey's website and discovered that they will rent a proper reamer for £10/day. Not sure why I hadn't looked earlier really, many apologies for wasting your time. A4H charge you for the tool and then refund it when returned undamaged. I presume that the £10 is charged for the postage time so it makes it a bit of an expense but a somewhat sensible and manageable solution. |

Peter | peter, would leaving one old bush in and reaming a new one first then pressing in the other and reaming that one the same size as the first, then reaming both to size together work. _________________ 1957 ford popular |
