Old-car material can be found on all of the above, but which do you prefer to use??
For random chat-chat, or fluff, I think forums, Facebook and Twitter work ok.
For longer discussions, I don't think Facebook or Twitter work particularly well given how quickly posts and topics disappear out of view, replaced with more recent postings. Specific topics and posts are hard to search for once time has passed.
Facebook works well in instances where news items, such as car thefts, need spreading to as wide-an-audience as possible within a short space of time. Twitter is similar in this regard.
While forums are a bit "old school" compared to some of the later social media platforms that have popped up in recent years, and require a little more time invested in them by posters, I do think that FB and T are too ephemeral - content can be here today, then lost from sight tomorrow.
What are your thoughts on the various options for discussing old cars online that are available nowadays?

A Forum for me every time. I can go back to all the RedeX posts to see whether I have missed something; I cannot do that with Face Book or Twitter.

I like the forum Rick, a very good platform for discussion. _________________ 1937 Ford 7w

I keep a toe in all three forms of communication, but general feedback on the three types (not specific to OCC, just in general) is interesting and helps with forward planning.

Whilst I prefer forums for exchanges of information, quite a few of my 'specific interest' groups..owners' clubs, etc..have a FAcebook group...it's free to use, and fairly instant.
As a result, whatever forum existed beforehand, generally dies out.
So I get lumbered with FAcebook.
And this place.... |

I don't think its an either /or...... Rick pretty much summed it up in the opening post; for chit chat, banter and notification of events Facebook or Twitter is better than a forum, but for posts that are for discussion or restoration blogs the forum is a better medium.

Forums for me every time - don't do facebook or twitter and don't feel inclined to. It seems barely a week goes by without some fresh scandal involving facebook or twitter emerging, but when was the last time a forum like this caused an international panic? I rest my case... |

I've never understood why you would want to tell the whole world about something you are doing. The common interests of forums make much better sense to me.

I use Facebook but if we think about the "depth" of the content then Facebook and Twitter are on the surface and forums are much deeper. One can pull up old discussions, the general tone of the chat is far more in depth, and is far more interesting since people are knowledgeable on the subject. How many times, for example, on Facebook, do you see the same reply time and again because they can't be bothered to read the thread? It is purely a gratuitous programme. |

Peter | It's actually the other way round; on FB you can select who see's your posts, whereas on this forum the whole world can see them... member or not.

I visit Facebook groups, purely to keep abreast of activities, however I much prefer to use a Forum and of all that I visit,, yours, Rick, must be counted the best. _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

You raise an interesting point. I sometimes wonder about setting up a members' area, ie only visible to signed-up members. Would it encourage more use of the forum? Would it lead to posts that would normally sit in the publicly-viewable area, being hidden away behind a login, leading to fewer people signing up? Mmmm

I used to be web editor for the Austin A30 a35 owners club, when the Farcebook page was started it halved the visits to the forum and some folk never returned, it did recover a little but never to what it was.
I only really use groups on Farcebook, Ford Y and C Register have a members only page and the FSVOC have two pages, one open to all and one for members for technical help and club stuff, technical help is not allowed on the open page, I suppose to encourage folk to join the club.
Starting an OCC page might go either way but I don't think it will harm this forum as you have so many stalwart members. I suppose it's a suck it and see situation, if it doesn't work how you want it to you can always close it. _________________ Paul

Forums only for me; I signed up to Facebook because I seemed to be missing notifications of events, but since I only accessed it two or three times a week I was still missing out! I haven't been back on Facebook for several months
now, and have now inclination to in the future. I've not even considered Twitter ... _________________ in the garage: 1931 Austin 7, 1953 Lancia Appia
