It's definitely an Alfa Romeo, probably a 1750; it appears to carry racing number 8 on the bonnet, in which case it's Achille Varzi's car from the 1930 Ards TT Race ... but that was GH 1557, and his car appears to have a registration number ending in 75, not 57!
edit: If it is the Ards TT, that would make the location Belfast; but as you suggest, Ferguson was a Dublin dealer, so that probably means the event is the Irish Grand Prix held in Phoenix Park, Dublin. In 1930 the Alfa Romeos carried competition numbers in the twenties, so that may mean this is a 1500cc car from 1929... more research needed! _________________ in the garage: 1938 Talbot Ten Airline

I cannot find any photos, but it looks like it's Tim Birkin's 8C 2.3 from 1931:
