Ladies and gentlemen,

Can I have some advice identifying a particular black plastic, please?

Last year I had a new garage door fitted and an "in transit" piece of door bottom protector I left in place.
For some time I have wanted to protect the top rails and the top of the tailgate of my daily use Land Rover 110 pic up.
I removed the garage door protector and by complete coincidence it's ideal for the purpose.

Here are some photos :

The channel is in black plastic 55mm x 20mm deep and has a ribbed surface when seen from above.

Can anybody tell me what it is called and where I can buy some more?
A channel without the inside "ribs" would be even better.

Thank you.

(Badhuis - thank you for the advice, the "img" does not now appear)

Hi Ellis,

Perhaps the garage door suppliers have a packaging suppliers who can help?

Or try googling 55mm PVC or 55mm Plastic channel.....

I found this white ducting on ebay which you could cut to fit perhaps??

Thanks Steve,

I tried emailing the garage door's manufacturer to ask but have received no answer.
A phone call proved fruitless as I was passed from reception to accounts then onto stores, then engineering and back to reception.

I'll try your suggestion and have a hunt on Ebay. Hadn't thought of that!
Simply Googling "black plastic 55mm x 20mm U shaped channel" revealed images but I can't upload them, it;s blocked it would seem and then something called Unistrut came up but that's only in metal.

Here we go...................

Hi Ellis. I too went "a googling" typed in "25mm wide u channel rubber".

I used 25mm or 1" as a starter. Via the Images option there were quite a few UK companies who suppy U channel materials. I noted that you mentioned plastic and it could be that is what you prefer but I wondered if rubber would be suitable. Good hunting and let us know how you made out, there could be other "Landy" folk who may wish to protect the top edges.

Thank you Peter.

I'm looking at the piece as I write this and it could be rubber so I'll try that route as well.

I have posted on the Land Rover forums but had little, well, no response from those I belong to.

I will let you all know how I get on.

Is that the Galvanised top edges all the way round like on the Series?
Perhaps just remove the paint?

Just a thought..... Idea

No, Steve, the ones on a Defender are simply painted body colour.

I have received a reply from the garage door's manufacturer this morning and the channel is called a "prat" apparently.
Understandable, but they need proof of purchase to assist further and I've sent a copy of the invoice from the local appointed retailer.

I have had one good suggestion - to buy a length of plastic electrical conduit but the only problem is that these conduits are only available in white although available in the exact profile and dimensions.

Can it be bought in black I wonder?

Incidentally the "prat" material is polypropylene, not plastic or rubber.

I think the plastic used in electrical conduit would probably shatter after a few knocks.

The round conduit comes in black or white,
but the square and rectangle shaped trunking I have only seen in white.

The Electrical wholesalers where I work buy much of their trunking and conduit from here:

The garage door manufacturer emailed me back this afternoon and congratulated me on an unforeseen use for their u channel "prat" and then politely refused to sell me any or identify a supplier.

It was admitted that it is manufactured in Germany but no more was forthcoming.

Brick wall syndrome but I don't give up easily and will now go to detective mode.

Phil,

I'm only having problems with these huge images on OCC from Imgur.
On every other forum (and that's only a few) they show normal size. I'm new to the Imgur so I'll go back there and see if I can do something.

Bear with me.

You can use the bar at the bottom to scroll across the picture

I use Imjur, not the best but simple. I looked at the site just now and also Googled it, reading comments from other users it seems as if the Imjur resize system either doesn,t work or is so slow it gives the impression of not working.

Many of my archived scanned photos I have resized anyway. New ones off the camera, I file as is and make a resized version if it is one I want to use on e-mail / media / web etc

RE the bottom scroll bar, I have known this vanish when the screen has a large photo.

That's what happens when I try to resize the image, there's a choice of sizes but the instruction is ignored as Peter writes. What is strange is that these huge photos only appear on the OCC forum.

To return to this U shaped channel, what I have done is register with two DIY forums and posted photos (they all pasted correct size incidentally) and asked if anybody can identify them.

Have you OCC forumers any suggestions where else I can ask?
There's a German lady who lives in the village and I will ask her if she can find out more via Germany's Google.

Hi
If you have lost the bottom sideways scroll, try Ctrl and - together or use the zoom out control on your browser.
