An E-type. Well, to be brutally honest a 1948 Series E Morris 8, one that was owned by my uncle and fell foul of the Ten Year Test in 1960 due to a rotten chassis. Ah, learning to drive and charge around the field in it! |

The first motorised machine I owned was my first car, a 1936 Austin Seven Opal, but my first motorised driving experience was on a ride-on lawn mower: my grandparents had retired to a semi-derelict old rectory in the middle of Norfolk, and one of his first acquisitions was a fearsom lawnmower powered by a 1000cc JAP engine and three-speed transmission. Imagine a ten year-old tearing around the lawn at twenty miles an hour! It was a BIG lawn:

My first vehicle I owned was a 1936 Morris Eighteen. I drove it around our Essex smallholding paddocks. I gallon of petrol lasted one hour. Petrol just under five bob a gallon which represented three hours Saturday morning work on a nearby farm. We modified it to run on TVO. (Tractor Vapourising Oil, or power kero.) Clouds of white smoke! I owned this in 1959 at 15 years old.
My first drives were either the Fordson tractor or dad's Commer Tilly, with cushions behind me and under my bum. I would have been about eight years old.

Its weird being the same age as old people.

A 1938 Austin Big 7, acquired when I was 17 quickly followed by a Morris 8 series E when my father discovered how bad the brakes and steering really were. |

A 1933 MG K1 Magnette 4 seater. 6 cylinders, OHC 1087cc and a Wilson preselects gearbox. Cost me £7/10/- and the only time I got to ‘drive’ it was getting towed behind a 1 1/2 litre Jaguar from place of purchase to home by a workmate with brain damage. (He had a metal plate in his head). I often wonder how we made it the six miles in one piece. The engine had a collapsed bearing in the camshaft drive and I just couldn’t find a spare. Where were you Internet in 1959 when I needed you.
I scrapped it for a £fiver when seduced by a (running) 1948 Jaguar 2 1/2 litre saloon.

My first drive was an old Rudge pushbike with a cyclemaster rear wheel.
I didn’t own it but shared it with a bunch of lads. We took it in turns riding up and down the street, and had one or two telling offs from local beat policeman.
My own first car was a £20 Ford popular, 1954 in Bristol fawn. One wiper, no heater. Loved it, went all over the place in it. |

1967 Honda 90 motorbike !
Cruised at about 55 MPH (I was a lot lighter then!) gave about 90 miles to the gallon and ran for years with very little being done to it.
Wish I still had it ! |

Hi
The title doesn't require anything ridden or driven, yet nobody has mentioned model aeroplanes, cars or boats with I/C engines.
I only had rubber powered aircraft or gliders, but surely someone had a Glow Plug or Diesel powered model. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

As Penman suggested my first IC engine was a Cox .049 model airplane engine from there it got bigger up to .35cc Johnson Stunt Supreme engine.
Now I have 35cc weed whacker engine on my 12 ft Cessna clone plane.
The first fuel powered machine that I could ride was a Velo Solex motor bike
I delivered the Honolulu Star Bulletin newspaper on it - I thought I was king of the road when I could unhook the muffler and roar around with the straight pipe- always put the muffler pipe back on when delivering the paper.
I still remember the smell of Castrol R
cheers
