Can anyone help with finding photo(s) of this establishment? Via email earlier today:

--

I came across your website whilst looking for a photo online. I was unable to find just what I was looking for, so I wondered if you would be able to help.

I was recently describing to a friend the roadside petrol pumps that were still in use in the mid 1980's on Longbrook Street, Exeter, while I was a student at the University. I distinctly remember they were operated by a dapper gentleman in a white coat, with Brylcreemed hair and a neat moustache. There were just two pumps, uncovered, by the side of the road, each with a hose supported by a hinged arm, which he would deftly swing out over the customer's car.

When I described this to my friend, she thought I was either nuts or 130 years old! If you happened to have a photo of this gentleman - or something similar - this might help to prove that I am neither.

I look forward to hearing from you at your leisure, and would be very grateful for whatever pictures or information you happen to have.

It was quite common for garages located in towns to have the pumps against the building with arms that swung out across the pavement to access refuelling; the last one I can recall was in Nottingham, still in operation in the late 1990s.

Our garage in Fareham had the pumps set just off the pavement with the same swinging arm so people on foot could pass underneath while a car was being filled.
