I managed to buy a V8 Pilot just before the lockdown and need to do an oil change. Has anyone any experience of the oil filter conversion that consists of an adapter that takes a modern spin on filter? There are a couple available but the prices vary considerably. |

She won't win any beauty contests, being a bit bruised around the edges, but that's how I like them

Wow Sid, what a superb car. I love all the V8's and in this condition it makes it even better! _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

I've been looking for a Pilot for absolutely ages, and I'd almost given up. They all seemed to be almost concourse, which I'm not a fan of, or in one case, one I went to see was completely dismantled, with no way of knowing if all the parts were there, and the bloke was asking silly money. So when i saw this one advertised I jumped on it, and glad I did. The bonus was that the seller delivered it the day before lockdown, which the missus will be eternally grateful for.
She's a bit rough round the edges (the Pilot that is) but she wears her scars with pride, and I'm OK with that. The only thing is she's been hand painted at some stage, and not particularly well, so the brush marks are quite evident. I'm not sure what to do about that yet. I don't really want to spoil her lived in look.
Now I'm looking forward to the end of this crisis so I can drive her down to the pub and show her off. |

The pics make her look quite good, what's the interior like? _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

The interior is very good, the front seat has been reupholstered, the back is original and still good. The wheel has been refurbished. Someone did a good job of converting it to 12 volts, which I probably would have done myself.
As you can see it's got flashing indicators, but the semaphores also work. The dual horns, which I think are still 6 volt, make it sound like a ship docking. The only thing not working is the wipers, but as soon as I can figure out how to get at the motor I'll fix it. You can hear it leaking air/vacuum.
All in all a very solid old girl. |

A beautiful solid old car, Sid. It looks great and it certainly appears extremely usable.
It is wonderful when you have spent ages looking for a car to eventually get one that you are thrilled with. I spent two years looking for an Austin A40 Tourer back in the early seventies and still have it, so be prepared to have the Pilot for many happy years.

Its weird being the same age as old people.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution |

Looks in good shape! Excuse my ignorance but are the wipers vacuum?

Pilots had vacuum wipers originally, but they were not quite as bad as the small Fords, because they had two large vacuum storage tanks set in the inner front wings. |

Situated in the shadow of Heathrow Airport. I've only seen one other Pilot, and that was at Brooklands (a visitors car)
The wipers are vacuum, I've just had the "motor" out which was almost seized up with the grease, and gave it a good clean. |

A really great find, Sid. I know exactly what you mean about the concours cars that come up for sale. I think you could happily repaint the body without it looking too "bling" but before doing that I would investigate if there is good original paint under the brushed on stuff. Sometimes you can be lucky (like I was) and the original paint - which was a hard wearing enamel - remains more or less in tact.
From what you have said, I think the Pilot has found an appreciative owner.
For what it's worth I gather one reason there are so few survivors is that when they were plentiful but of low value, they were the choice of stock car racers who found them virtually indestructible! |

The first time I went under the car I noticed the chassis, or at least most of it, was green. Also, some of the wheels have small bits of green paint showing through where the black has been scratched or worn away. So yes it's possible that it may still be that colour underneath. The only thing is, was it painted because someone felt like a change or was something wrong with it. Out of interest, how did you go about it?
As for stock car racing, where I live used to have a stock car/greyhound race track many years ago. I've no doubt Pilots, as well as a large number of Nash's and Hudsons were sacrificed. Maybe mine escaped because it was first registered in Cardiff
