Having trouble with one of our Commer trucks.
New plugs, points, HT leads etc. Checked for spark and its there. Set the timing. Checked all the fuel lines and there is a good supply to the carb.
Start her and she turns over lots of times before spluttering and not firing properly. Give her full choke and this time she does fire but then immediately cuts out. Give her any throttle and same result.
Thoughts are timing and carb? _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

What's changed since it last started properly? |

This is the first time we have worked on her and tried to get her going, trying to tick off possibilities. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Most likely clogged carb jets from the old fuel.
A generous dose of carb cleaner might work, but can you strip & clean it & blow all the passages out? _________________ Mike - MVPeters at comcast.net

I think the next step will be to strip the carb. She turns over but doesnt fire and then floods. Spark checked and found at each plug so we are thinking fuel supply. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

You might have an inlet manifold air leak?

Haven't thought of that Peter, add that to the list. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

If it hasn’t been run for a long time it could be dry bores or if it floods washed bores causing lack of compression to draw the fuel in, try squirting engine oil into the bores and turning the engine over several times, then try a little fuel in each plug hole the refitting the plugs and retrying. It worked on my Morris 8. _________________ old tourer

I wondered about low compression, possibly an intermittently-sticking valve or two? Coupled with a possible air leak around the inlet manifold (or with anything that relies on vacuum pipes from it, such as a brake servo perhaps?) and a blocked jet somewhere.

Have you checked the firing order? Sounds like the plug leads haven't been put back in the correctly. |

Hi Sid, Yes plug leads checked and all in the correct firing order. We are getting a spark at each too. We have also set the timing as per the Instruction manual.
This is the first time we have carried out any work on the truck so I managed to get in touch with the previous owner. Interestingly he said years back he had the same issues and ended up removing the manifold and cleaning the carb etc. I am very much erring on the side that the manifold may not have been sealed correctly so with everything else checked over so far that will be our next task.
Remove the manifold, clean all the surfaces down and then re-gasket and re-seal. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Just throwing ideas out there, could the needle valve be sticking? It's always hard to diagnose a fault without actually "being there". |

I will strip the carb down, fuel is getting to it cause when the banjo inlet is slackened off fuel leaks out. Also, turn it over a few times and it does flood badly.
Any ideas or help is welcome. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

So removed the carb this morning, have spent the afternoon stripping and cleaning it down. No blocked jets but I did find a blockage in the air retard pipe. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Managed to get the manifold off today, found the remains of a homemade gasket and that the previous gasket hadn't been completely removed before that! The copper gasket to the exhaust was non existent also. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |
