GB is no longer valid/legal on vehicles when abroad. Boris has changed it to UK Rolling Eyes

The British government notified the United Nations three months ago to inform them that they (we) will be changing GB to UK. It's nothing to do with external forces (EU) and everything to do with Northern Ireland, which isn't seen as being in GB (the island of Great Britain) but is part of the United Kingdom (UK), even though NI vehicles have been using GB badges for the last hundred years. GB has been in use on vehicles since 1910.

I wandered round the deck of the Portsmouth - Caen ferry counting how many cars had the headlamp stickers technically required for driving on the right. 4 of 42 cars had them. I didn't, but then they aren't much use on the nascelles of an E-type anyway.

It's good to know that it's not an EU ruling. Before covid came on the scene I was booked to take the SS on a tour of the Netherlands and Germany and went to the trouble of making a bracket to fit a nice oval pressed alloy GB plate of vintage appearance. I don't think I'll bother looking for a "vintage" UK plate.

I read this article on the news and then realised that I have no reason to lose any sleep over it.

However, I recently went to our local Post Office to send a parcel to an address in England, the bit south of Scotland and to the East of Wales. I filled out the customs form and added the address but our post-lady (she is a lovely person always has been) couldn't find the post code in the Ukraine. It seems that Canada Post has England listed as being in "Great Britain". When I have a minute I want to ask her what the system says for post codes in the aforementioned areas that border England. Trivia has come a long way since I were a lad...

Some of you might recognize the place and even have been there, and this photo was taken about 25 years ago. I put this "GB" plate on in 1991, and have never seen any need to change it. Very tarnished now by exhaust fumes, but I call it patina.

I have seen 'GB' plates on cars with 'L' plates. I always thought it meant "Getting Better"

It is imho amazing that our government have in these unprecedented economic times, chosen to spend some of our hard earned tax's on some form of review, assessment, consultation and recommendation for this, that unless I'm missing something benefits no one in anyway shape or form, apart from the odd sticker manufacturer! Evil or Very Mad

I have several large embossed steel GB plates dating from the 1920s/30s. One in particular was a N.O.S. example in perfect un drilled condition.

I imagine their value has been slashed at a stroke. Sad

That's normal rally...According to banks, insurance companies, and even folk like the oensions pootlers, I live in 'HUmberside' as a county...which hasn't existed as a county since Noah were a lad!

To be fair, it just isn't worth the candle to insist on all these austere establishments changing their compoooterised address books...

If they can't be bothered to get it right, why should I care?
