I read all the various opinions about what should be done with the car and have been left feeling somewhat saddened. The new owners are doubtless keen to share their good fortune with other Austin Seven enthusiasts but the mistake was inviting suggestions as to what should be done with it. Our hobby has become increasingly one where people other than the owner think they should be able to decide the outcome.
That said, however, things have improved markedly from when I started tinkering with old cars. Long gone are the days when all that a "restoration" needed was a tin of yellow Valspar and some vinyl seat coverings.  |

I think it's healthy for others to express their views on how to treat old vehicles.
Just a week or two ago I was in conversation with a gentleman who plans to scrap a good condition 1939 SS Jaguar saloon to make a nondescript "special" on a cut down version of the saloon's chassis. I failed to dissuade him but feel no guilt in my attempt.

I can see the point.
When faced with the rebuilding [or repairing...I don't do restoration, its not a church!], then starting from scratch with a simple, open 2 or 4 seat body gets something useable [if not presentable?] quite quickly. Everything can easily be got at, too.
But the prospect of rectifying problems with a full bodywork saloon, which involves not only the outside, but the interior as well, is for me, quite daunting.
I look at the cheap stuff on ebay [sub-3K is my topside limit]....and if the headlining is absent or damaged, I go no further.
CArpets I can just about cope with...seats as well, but an absent dashboard, to go back to original, is also something that puts me off, these days.
It's about originality versus what's easier, I suppose?

Quite right Peter. There is a world of difference between the Austin Seven special being discussed (already chopped about) and destroying a good sound restorable SS Jaguar saloon; presumably to make a replica SS100?
IT is the reason why I personally would actually prefer a Suffolk "look alike" to a potentially more accurate replica made from a butchered SS saloon. I would also be surprised if the one you mention does not turn out to be a disappointment; it certainly won't go as well as the XK powered alternative. |
