Hi Ray

yes, I'm aware of that scheme, we have had our own since 2018, although Covid 19 meant that we have only had 2 beneficiaries, we bought the car in 2017 specifically to use as a younger person's loan car. It's one of the easier pre-war cars to drive.
The car will be at the NEC show next week.

I once dreamed up a scheme with a different objective. There would be a register of owners who would be prepared to temporarily exchange their vehicles. Perhaps a car club set up with a small membership fee would be the way to go. It would be like an affordable, not for profit version of the "high end" schemes that seem popular in London.

I imagine that insurance might be a complication given all the variables.

I gave up on the idea when the Data Protection Act was introduced.

Penman, There is synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd and top gear so there should be no need to double de-clutch.

The Series E synchromesh was a revelation if you had only ever driven with a 'crash' gearbox.

My Mum learned to drive in our Series E because the gear change was easier but my Dad still used to double de clutch because he just drove that way.! He eventually came round to using the "new fangled" synchromesh. Very Happy

Seems like a great idea. As soon as I had my license at 17 I (naively!) tried and failed to rent a classic car. I used to dream of driving a Ford Zephyr or Austin Cambridge. I waited until I was 25 and the cost of renting one was incredible. It didn't put me off classics, but it made it hard to start the interest properly, earlier. There was an Austin Cambridge parked up which I used to walk past on the way to school when I was 11 and it was still there when I left home at 24.

When I was 25 I did end up buying a Super Minx for £400, but it was rotten as a pear. I bought another one not long after which was much better but still needed lots of work and I was moving house again at the time.

I'm in my early 30s now and have had a car (a Singer Gazelle) since last year. I can work on it and enjoy it, and it's relegated my daily car to the road. I would know a lot more than I do now though, if I've been able to get out and drive one and start asking the questions when I was younger.

I think this is a great idea. There are a lot of 'older members' of car clubs who are - to be blunt - plainly arrogant. I think it's changing, but like ale festivals, there is still this perception of groups of older chaps in their exclusive club who believe you are too lowly to join them.
