Pretty ugly I thought. Does not look very original with only two doors and that terrible woodwork. _________________ 1938 Morris 8 Ser II Coupe Utility (Pickup)

I am inclined to agree with the view that it started out as a van. The Vanguard estates that I have seen and are illustrated online all have four doors. I haven't seen a picture of a 'woody' _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

Or possibly one of these?

The two door version was the van which was a popular basis for a cheap conversion.
Was there once a road tax advantage to having a van? |

In the UK it was purchase tax advantage if you kept it as a van for a certaain length of time then you could fit windows and rea seats without having to pay the additional tax.
Purchase tax varied at different time and with different car values between 33.3% and 66.6%.

My wife remembers her Father doing this with an Austin A40 Devon van.
( I am not sure but I have a faint memory of BMC producing their own 'Passenger Van' ...but I can't be certain.) |

I owned a 1959 Commer van in 1966/67. It had the same body shape as the earlier Hillman Minx station wagon, (estate car?) so I visited a local wrecker and bought and fitted windows and rear seats from a 1953/4 Minx wagon. A friend worked in the UK customs and he checked out the purchase tax I would need to pay. Luckily, they decided that as the cost was less than ten quid, it was waived.
Very nice car that was. The very last car I owned in the UK before heading to the colonies.

Its weird being the same age as old people.

What a nice picture that is, Peter!
I wonder if that is a factory offering or a conversion? Certainly an attractive option for travelling..
I don't think the Countryman had wood like that.
I showed the photo to Jean and she seemed to think it was like that. |
