So, here's a question.

We are looking to transport a restoration project back from France to the UK, it's not far from Paris.

The vehicle is a small truck, chassis cab, non runner but movable. About 2 tons and the length of a transit van. It would comfortably fit on a 7.5 ton truck.

My question, has anyone moved anything from France to the UK? Would anyone recommend any transport companies? And would anyone be able to offer any advise on importing something such as this? I can find a lot of information about importing running and licenced vehicles but not about projects?

I think you need to get the DVLA on side first or they could become difficult to deal with.

I repatriated a 1939 Morris SE Tourer from France in 2017. Went over with a trailer and picked it up, much easier as it was originally registered in the UK, since 1983, the DVLA put an "export" marker on a car that leaves the UK and simply remove it if it comes back, which also allocates the original reg.

You will need the French registration documents, without these you will effectively be importing a load of parts, without it will have no ID for the DVLA to base a registration. If no French reg doc, if there is a DVLA recognised club in the UK, and the chassis number can confirm the vehicle type and year of manufacture, and the vehicle has original spec oily bits the DVLA should issue an appropriate registration, failing that you are then into IVA and all the associated costs & complications. Also, without the French docs , at import, you wont be able to prove its over 30 years old so import vat will be charged at 20% rather than 5% .

With the French reg document, even if its a load of bits, the import process is quite straight forward.

DVLA recognised clubs:

One of my friends on our military forum has given me the name and number of a haulier based in Holland who will also complete all the relevant paperwork for us. Apparently they are used to transporting wartime trucks around Europe.

I will give them a call and see what's involved.

You could enquire with this chap who moves a lot of classics around in UK. I'm sure he could advise options.

I had a chap recommended to me from Holland, his quote has come in and with the Ferry, tolls, fuel etc and he will do all the import paperwork...it works out cheaper than some of the quotes I had to move our truck from Somerset to Yorkshire for a show!!!

I hope you actually know the person who made the recommendation or at least have verified his bona fides.

A friend was having a hard top brought over from the UK to France for him, then found out that the hard top would attract import duty at 5% of the unit's value. Since the total would be about £250 he decided to take a few days in the UK, put the hard top on his car, and take the ferry back. No problems occurred and he had a good time with friends and family.

Not the best news to get on Christmas Eve...

A project that I have spent about 4 months negotiating I managed to find a transport company based in the Netherlands, in November them travelled down into France and collected the project then returned it to their yard so they could undertake the import paperwork....

Roll on to Christmas Eve and we get a message telling us they won't be able to deliver the truck to us at all now and can we therefore find another Transport Company...not good news at all.

So now, I'm hurriedly trying to find another company who can pick it up from his yard, finish the paperwork and ship it over.

lots more Paperwork, lots more hold ups with the French Authorities...

But the next project is finally loaded and after 80 years is going to be repatriated to Blighty!!
