Tap, die and drill ordered from Tracy Tools, so can't get on with making the insert until they turn up. I could make the plug for the handle bit though.

Effectively woodwork on the metalwork lathe. Gawd, it's made a mess! Re-gound an old chisel, ran the lathe at high speed and the polyurethane resin worked quite nicely. Sanded back to 1200 grit and it'll do as the master plug quite nicely. It'll be a vertical mould with narrow end down, so open topped. Shaping the top will have to be an after casting operation.

Comparison shot. I think I've got it pretty close.
And that's as far as I can go until the tools turn up.

The plug got remodelled slightly to accept a solid beauty ring.

Threaded brass insert turned up with mounting post for the mould.

A few samples turned out to explore different finishes.

Beauty rings being nickel plated. Wife terrified that the kitchen was full of hydrogen and would explode on lighting the hob....

Start and finish. Duly sent off to club member.

Who seems delighted. Certainly looks the part.
Thank you all for your assistance. I now have to try and work out which of the BMC cars it fits, starting from the MO. There seem to be black versions as well as white ones.
