Wasn't planning to make a purchase, but have always fancied a recovery truck! this came up at an auction house that was mainly selling wardrobes, so I don't think it got much attention , and as such I got it for very little
I will post some more detail, I took these pics in the dark, trying to be "Arty" ha ha
Its parked at the end of my drive, and thus far 3 people have knocked on the door, 2 wanted to buy it and its has also been spotted by OCC Management, so I thought I better come clean.
Its clearly been stood for a while, started quite easily, clutch was stuck, but I have managed to free it, and bonus the brakes work!
Its a Thames 2 ton, with the 4 cylinder "cost cutter" petrol engine, whether it was always a recovery vehicle , I have no idea, it came with zero history. Black and white plates are on order, just received new cooling hoses and a fan belt that I will fit prior to its (for me) first run.

I was meaning to post a "spotted" photo of it, but it would have been from my dashcam so probably impossible to figure out what it was. _________________ 1976 Vauxhall HP Firenza, 1976 Vauxhall Sportshatch (x2), 1986 Audi coupe quattro, 2000 Audi TT |

Replaced all the cooling hoses and put a new fan belt on, engine is running ok, good oil pressure when hot, plugs look a reasonable colour, although engine bogs down if you open the throttle anything other than gently, I suspect the carb accelerator pump may not be operating correctly.
The rain had eased off so decided to give it an inaugural (for me) run and complete my shopping errand so a trip to Sainsburys, about 4 miles away which is all on the busy A51. Happily it was uneventful, crash box needs some thought, I'll get used to it, seems quite happy at 40-50mph, so wasn't really holding the traffic up. Oddly enough I bumped into Rick and his better half in Sainsburys, funny how things like that happen!
Next job is to sort the carb out. Overall plan is just to oily rag it, new black and white number plates arrived from Frampton's yesterday, so I'll fit them, only problem with them is that they look too new and shiny!

Might take you up on that, be good to have a vehicle being "recovered" the M8 tourer barn find would be a good candidate.
There is a notice about passengers in the cab:
However, as I am now "The Company" I can authorise it
I have no history of this vehicle, would love to know its past, was thinking that if I rubbed the doors down there may be a company logo, alternatively I might find nothing and then have to paint the doors! |
