Just watched a couple of episodes of this and I must say the way the guys have shown and described simple DIY repairs to brake pipes and the likes is very good.

My 12 year old boy is glued to it, they put it in such a way that its made very simple. Not one of those programmes where everything is sent off to be fixed!!

IT is in stark contrast to the Bangers and Cash (Restoring Classic Cars) programme where it seems they are happy to loose thousands of pounds by farming out the work to specialists.

I like a good car programme where they actually show you some tips, not just 'here's something some other specialist has fixed for us...'

This appeared recently on another forum (Pistonheads), "Mumbles Boy" is a member of the production team for B&GRC and responded to some similar comments.

Good morning folks,

I am delighted the chat is still rumbling on.

I thought I would put on my thick skin and have a quick look after the mini show to gauge the mood!

Yes, it was a terrible loss, but a fabulous restoration. A tremendous car that will live for many more years now - as will the T25, Morgan, Land Rover etc. I would be delighted to own any of them, it would make me very happy indeed.

There are many correct assertions on the chat and plenty of incorrect assumptions, so can I put a few thoughts out there by way of context to explain some of the thinking behind what we are trying to do with the restos show.

The starting point is this is a TV show in the factual entertainment category that I hope people enjoy, most seem to. It?s not a documentary, but as you will probably know - we tend to major on the authentic and factual. No stunts, no false jeopardy and as little yabber as possible.

Many of your comments are naturally around the profit and loss element, and I do accept that is a very fundamental part of the narrative of the programme. If you were doing this, I doubt you would be selling the cars.

As ever, what you see is what you get. We buy at the auction, we don't win everything we bid on, we pay our commission.

When we find someone suitable to do the work, we don?t do a ?TV deal? as some suggest, we pay for parts and labour and don?t expect or ask for any financial favours. We wouldn?t accept them, we do try and keep it in reality. We are passionate enthusiasts who restore cars for the joy of the journey - albeit akin to watching England play football sometimes! Clearly more often than not, - we are going to take a hit, and sometimes - a really big one. A wise man said ??you don?t make money restoring classic cars?

Now there are some other things we need to throw into our mix here. At any one time we have 12 or more vehicles of different kinds at different restorers on the go. If you have ever restored a car yourself, you will know, it?s rarely plain sailing once it gets up on that ramp. Multiply that by 12.

Some need a lot of work, eg. the Mini - some less, eg. the Audi TT. We still have cars in restoration that I bought at the very beginning of filming, and somewhat unwisely in hindsight. When you set out making a TV series you've not done before, the production schedule dictates and you learn fast - so if I bought a few cars at the very start that seemed a good idea at the time and they are still in restoration now, you can work it out, I got that wrong. Fortunately, there's only a few of those left to go, but you will see them in future shows and think what numpty thought that was a good idea. I agree.

We are always working to a deadline to complete and finish shows, so we now have to have a mix of cars in the restoration pack to shuffle. It is a really complex plate spinning act, but in some ways it is easier than it was. Series 1 was really tough, series 2 a bit easier... and so on.

We try and buy vehicles that I believe different members of our car community can relate to and will find interesting. On top of that, the occasional motorbike etc. I could do a Focus RS/ST or similar every time, one that needs no bodywork - and possibly lessen the odds, but I don't think we would have many viewers left, albeit there would probably be a few!

I am learning a lot, the hard way. The experts among you will already know all this and be a bit frustrated, I get that - but it is a programme for everyone who loves cars, and the hope is a few more new faces will take the plunge, with their eyes open, and turn up at a show with a classic and a smile on their face.

I guess plenty of you will have been through financially painful restorations as well, and when I said ?I?m happy with that? re. the mini selling for 30k, I was acknowledging that?s a good price for a Cooper - that was its money. Yes. I lost 40k, staggering, not happy about that - but you saw the work and the finished product. If I was keeping that car, I would be delighted. It's an heirloom to be proud of. Any sane person would keep a car they had spent that sort of money on restoring, and hopefully get great value out of using and enjoying it. I wish!

The money is real and the restoration spreadsheet is terrifying. Yes, as a production company we make our money from making a TV show, and we make many others as well as this one. Balancing the books on this production alone is fundamental, and cash flow is king. There are pained meetings the Monday after auctions and tomorrow will be no exception. Fortunately the guy who runs the company is very sympathetic to the cause - and UKTV/Yesterday are massively supportive of the show and the authenticity we are trying to achieve. There is clearly a defined budget over the production, it used to cause me sleepless nights, occasionally still does, but I?ve got used to it - and I think all will be fine on the day of reckoning, time will tell.

We have to go all in on restorations now. We are selling these cars with an expectation that they are good. I absolutely do not want to sell a car that is going to cause the buyer a headache. If you look at the auction description of the cars we sell, we are brutally honest, but the aim is to try and sell something that we are proud of and the new owner can get a lot of pleasure from.

This is getting very long, so I think I should stop now and just post - I could go on but over to you.

Thank you for continuing to watch, thank you especially to the brilliant and supportive team at my end, enjoy father?s day - and a happy father?s day to my dad and his Sunbeam Rapier Series 2 who started all this off. I haven't said that in a long time.

Best wishes

Mumbles Boy has given what I would say is a very fair assessment of the situation. I would not wish to criticise the B&C team for doing what they obviously need to do to make a unique and interesting programme but it would, I think, help if they could explain their agenda at some point during the programme...or it risks being received with incredulity by the less well informed viewer.

Personally, I am only too well aware of the pit falls of restoration. My 1949 MG TC may have only cost a reasonable 18K to buy, but restoration will have swallowed up a further 65K by the time it is finished...and that is with doing most of the work myself.!

If I had left it to a specialist the bill would have been astronomical.
