The J40 was a pedal car modelled on the A40 Devon, not the A40 Somerset. They were built in Wales by miners who had been pensioned off with lung disorders from the coal mining. They were built from 1949 until 1971. Over 32000 were made. They hold a special fascination for me as I have owned an A40 Tourer, the full sized version of the J40, for over fifty years.
I have never heard of a pedal car version of the A40 Somerset before.

Its weird being the same age as old people.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution |

I used to have a J40 as a child.
I suppose that was what started it all off. |

Dad wouldn't have bought it new. He always acquired second hand things and beautifully restored them.
I also had a U.S. Military Jeep which went faster!

The Jeep was probably made by Tri-ang. |

I remember the biggest problem was if the pedals stopped at a certain point you couldn't move them. I had to get out and push it a bit to get going again. Then again. we only had a grotty earth path in the garden and the lane outside was unadopted, so it wasn't until I got as far as the Council estate that there was a smooth path...then it was whoosh!! |

Never seen a Somerset convertible. They must have been few and far between even in their day.

Someone will probably know,,,did Austin produce a Devon or Dorset Convertible?
(I will forever kick myself for not rescuing a rusty A40 Dorset from a garden in Ascot back in the 1980s. The area was due for redevelopment so it was probably scrapped.) |

Yes Ray, Austin produced A40 Devon/Dorset 2 door convertibles (actually tourers with side screeens) in Australia. I have owned one for over fifty years!
