I've just helped an elderly neighbour who's 25 year old Lawn Tractor wouldn't start, it was a faulty starter solenoid so a simple fix. I commented on what good condition it was in and how well it ran it given its age, which lead to a conversation about its maintenance, it turns out that in the 25 years of ownership, apart from a couple of batteries, he had to replace a broken drive belt and a leaky fuel hose. Other than that nothing, its running on its original oil (he can remember having to top it up once) original spark plug and air filter. Even the tyres are original.
All he does it at the end of the season is run it out of fuel and wash it with a jet wash.
Admittedly it probably only see's 50 hours use a year, but makes you think.... |

My neighbour gave me his motor mower because it had packed up. Rather than getting it repaired the had just bought a new one.
I found the problem was a faulty coil. What I also found one it was running, was that the mower was too heavy for me to push.
As it happened I inherited a similar motor mower from my wife's Uncle who had passed away. This one is self propelled. The different is quite incredible; especially on slopes.
The neighbour's mower is now probably being made into baked bean tins.
I also have a Husqvarna chainsaw with a failed electrical component which will cost 100 GBP to replace. Rather than throw good money after bad, I bought a Stihl chainsaw ...and it is superb. |

My stepson gave his mum, (my Missus) a Husqvarna weed line trimmer for a prezzy because she had trouble starting the one we had. WHAT A PILE OF RUBBISH !!! I used to have a lot of respect for that brand because of the high quality they had back in the 60s/70s, but boy are they cashing in on their name and selling outright "shoddy" things now. I will never ever buy one with that name again! |

My mower refused to start and I traced the fault to the electronic ignition unit. I checked the price in Melbourne and it was some ridiculous price, then went on line and found one in China for about a third of the price. Fitted it and it has lasted longer than the original. _________________ 1938 Morris 8 Ser II Coupe Utility (Pickup)
