The old simple points and coil ignition system that we are all familiar with is actually a complicated circuit.

I found this article, it explains the theory in some detail. The ignition circuit behaves like a Alternating current 'tuned circuit' the spark 'voltage' is actually a oscillating sine wave of high/low voltage. I'm not a electronics person, but it is interesting.
