We all know someone for this car! Come on Ray, you have been waiting for this to show up for sale. More stylish than a MkVI Bentley. Perfect for a nice drive to Scotland to meet Peter and his similar car! _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

As it happens I contacted Peter about this some time ago. Everything depends on me getting the MG finished and sold so that I have the space.
Peter. I wish you well. |

A little over 32 years.
I'm 76 and my wife is 78. Two years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of my body. I'm on drugs that suppress the spread but the side effects of these are that both my strength and endurance are about half what they once were so even small jobs on the car can be taxing. I really struggled with replacing the clutch last year but I'm happy to report the clutch now operates correctly. No slipping and disengages properly and takes up smoothly and progressively.
I have loads of spare parts, two engines, a gearbox, a steering box, road wheels, a set of ACE discs and much more. Whilst my wife could possibly sell the SS if I was no longer here the spares could present her with problems. Ideally I would like to sell the car first.
The car is nice to drive with good acceleration and fairly neutral roadholding with very little roll. The steering is heavy if the car is not in motion but is not at all heavy on the move and she turns into corners very nice and sharply.
Although it's a long time since I reconditioned the gearbox the synchromesh still operates just as well as it does in this video.

The car was resprayed by the previous owner in the late 1980s and it looks OK but would really benefit from a complete strip and respray.
There is a lot more about SS Jaguars in general and this car in particular in my website. See below.

Where one assumes things and do not check before writing an answer
When you pointed out this car for sale I wrongly assumed you did so because you may knew the owner, and because it was similar to your car.
I did not check the number plates or the car in detail, and would have known it was not another car but your own!
So sorry to hear about the reason for selling it Peter. Wishing all the best for your health. Hope you find a good owner for it. _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

Peter, what a great shame you have to consider parting with this beautiful car. I do hope it stays in the UK as the Americans are always eager to steal them away.
I hope your health improves. I too am finding the things I used to do without thinking are much more taxing and just wish for a younger apprentice to assist.
There are becoming fewer people that appreciate our pre war cars, or can keep them going without very deep pockets.
All the very best to you. _________________ Daimler Fifteen 1934 (now sold)

Firstly, Peter I hope your health improves, I wish you all the best.
Secondly, such a superb car and I know thirty years in your ownership she has been very well looked after. I very much hope she finds a new owner who looks after her for the next thirty years. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Hi Pete and Rootes,
Thank you both for your kind words. I too would prefer that the car remained in the UK and if people are put off by the price I am willing to be flexible.
My health will not improve but so long as the drugs continue to work I should not get any worse. Apparently after a few years the cancer gets resistant to the drugs and my oncologist tells me that they can transfer me onto a different drug. Unfortunately they all have nasty side effects and the one I'm on is the least bad.

That's such a stylish car, sorry to read of the reasons for selling, I hope the sale goes smoothly although I'm sure it'll be a wrench to see it go after all this time. But if it going means one less thing to worry about, then that has to be a positive thing in a way.
Your support over the years for things here on OCC has always been appreciated and I hope that your health battles remain manageable for a long time to come.

Thanks Rick,
Be assured I'll still be using your excellent website and forum that has given me a lot of pleasure over the years.
I've not been doing more than about 200 miles / year in the SS in recent years and I just don't have the strength to maintain an old car any more as I discovered when renewing the clutch last year. Even routine jobs like tyre changing are beyond me although I made dozens of tyre changes on the SS in the past without much difficulty.
It's not just the lack of strength. About a year ago I had a really painful left knee and my lower leg and foot had gone numb. I told my oncologist about this and he sent me for an MRI scan in case the cancer had got into my spine. It hadn't but the report told us that I had a slipped disc. Apart from the knee pain I had to be careful walking and if I tried to run I would fall over. Anyway the disc problem has subsided but I don't doubt that it could easily return if I'm not careful. I really am an old crock.
Best wishes,

Peter,
I'm very sorry to hear of your health issues and am sad that it neccessitates selling your loved car.
However I can appreciate the problems of maintaining old cars as we get older.
My vehicles get used very little these days, and when repairs under the car are needed, I resort to throwing ever spanner I have onto the floor to make sure I don't have to struggle out from under to get a spanner or tool I forgot!
I hope you get a quick sale and that the lovely Jag goes to a loving and appreciating new owner.

Its weird being the same age as old people.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution |

Thanks Keith,
I know exactly what you mean about spanners on the floor. Getting out from under my car in a confined space is struggle and that plagued me no end with my recent need to solve an issue with my starter solenoid.
Getting the starter motor out requires both exhaust down pipes to be removed.

The new owner very kindly sent me photos to show that the SS had arrived safely in Exeter.
I had fitted the "parking" radiator cap before the carrier uplifted but be assured that the leaper cap also arrived safely.
