My Grandad use to say "chrome is for admiring in the summer and protecting in the winter"
He also told me that chrome was porous (it was only years later that I understood what porous meant !!), so in the summer he would wax it weekly, but in the winter give it a wipe with a light oil, like 3 in 1. He refused to use any of the chrome polish’s or protectors. The chrome on his car was always in good nick, and must have been 12 years old when he stopped driving. The rest of the bodywork was not so good, I remember geting told off for poping a paint bubble!
Did he have a valid point? or was it just the fact that the chrome got treated with something on a weekly basis that made it survive so well ?

yeah I think it is porous!

don't blame him avoiding chrome polishes as they wear through the chrome over time. A wax polish regularly, and a coat of oil in winter, sounds perfick to me

Yes Guys, chrome is porous. Thats part of the reason that for a good chrome job on steel, you have to follow the Copper /Nickel / Chrome system if it is going to last!
