Received this the other day, the reference to banger racing in the same paragraph as car restoring is a bit of a turn off, but anyway here it is:

---------------------------------

Hi there,

I'm helping to develop a TV programme and am looking for mechanics that are into classic cars and could help restore some. I thought it would be interesting to try and find someone who was also into banger racing.
Would you be able to help by putting a call out to your membership to
see if there are people interested. Or if you know any people
personally, that would be even better.

Thanks in advance,

Charlotte

I think that guy needs to be made aware that there are NO links between classic cars and the banger racing mentality.

I fully agree with everyone, but...

Could we not teach them a lesson by putting together an OCC team, restore the cars, then drive off in them, never to be seen again? Very Happy

That would be good TV!

Could well be scotty! I could see it as a comedy, a kind of 'Summer Wine' meets 'Auf Wiedersen Pet' Laughing

I guess that the TV companies wouldn't have the imagination though!

there's nothing wrong with banger racing !!!!
so long as the cars are not stolen to race??

i have been racing since 1987 and never stolen a car to use and all the cars i have raced went out in a blaze of glory instead of being towed straight to the crusher, all the parts from these cars were advertised in local papers before ebay came along and i have helped plenty of classic car owners with good useable items for their classics,

nowadays i sell items at autojumbles and on ebay so if you need any parts give me a shout.........

It's not a question of stolen cars, more a question of wrecking restorable ones.

I guess to the people involved in the sport it is difficult to see what harm is done as the cars were all scrapyard bound in the first place.

It's only when you look back from the perspective of a decade or two and realise how valuable all those old spares would be now that the thing seems criminal.
Can you honestly look at photographs from the 70's banger racing without feeling sorry that all those Austin Somersets, Cambridges, Rover P4's and more were trashed when, had they been here now most all would be either restored or broken for much needed spares.

Just seems such a waste now, but of course it didn't then just like it probably doesn't to todays racers.
