So, etching is not required by law, but recommended by insurance companies?

That's right, only a recommendation.

UK insurance companies have progressively been increasing premiums as the years have gone by introducing "financial penalties" i.e. higher cost insurance if we don't have items like etching on a specific group of vehicles. Subaru's, Cosworth's, hot-hatches and the like, not to mention the exotic.

It appears though that like so much in the European Union each country seems to have its own set of rules.

Etching here is term of the insurance policy. If the company requests it, then it has to be carried out within a certain number of days, or the policy becomes null and void!

As Scotty say, different rules within the different EU countries!

It would seem then, that the problem of insurance companies running wild & un-checked is becomming a global affair! Insurance is required by the government, and if your policy drops, the insurer notifies the state. The policy requirements keep getting tighter, while the premiums get higher. But the pay-out on claims is less, you almost have to file a lawsuit to get half the coverage you paid for!
