Crystal ball time!

What recent-ish cars should be bought now while prices are in the doldrums, and stashed away somewhere dry and warm, and that will be rare and sought after - although not necessarily super-valuable - in years to come? tricky one really ... say cars that are 10-15 years old at the mo, and whose prices are on the floor ..

some that spring to mind (not necessarily things I'd want to own, but chances are will become sought after in the future one day, maybe)..

V12 XJ40 Jag?
Good examples of common vans, like the Astravan and Fiesta van?
Sierra XR4i?
MG Metros?
MG Maestros?
Fiat Cinquecento Sportings?
End-of-line Minis (pre-BMW)?
Early MX5 Mazdas?
Base model Montegos, Sierras?
Mk2 Cavalier convertibles?
Early MPVs like the Espace?

Or are they a) all too boring b) too plentiful even now to be considered worthy of saving???????

Hi

How offended am I!!! Calling my little mini boring!! Wink Laughing

I think minis will become collectable, as time goes on, the early ones are now, as are the variants and especially the comercials!

Cheers

Rick

I have to disagree with your "base model" Sierras, Montegos. All your other suggestions are for sporty versions.

For almost every classic model it is the "top of the range" or the most sporty variant that is the most sought after - Jag Mk2's, Cortina 1600E/Lotus/GT, Mini-Coopers and so on.

When values are rock-bottom there is often only a few pounds difference in cost between the base model and top spec.

I am not a great fan but I reckon there are several Japanese classics of the future, especially the coupe or convertible versions that meet your criteria.

Not really sure about Commercials but a crew cab pick up might stand out at a classic show in 20 years time!

If history repeats itself then a good original sporting 90s Escort, RS2000, Cosworth or even Mexico is the obvious choice, followed by VW type 4 camper Smile
I think though that it will be the small cars that will be the ones to watch. Minis definitely, the later ones are surprisingly rare. Now for a couple of dead certs from Europe, lhd only will give them an extra appeal:

I tend to agree Brian, I threw in the poverty-spec common stuff so as not to dwell on sporty cars too much in the list, and I agree, its usually the plusher models that are sought after later on. Bog standard Mk2 Cortinas didn't have anything like the following of 1600Es and GTs when they skyrocketed a while back, so I guess the same may happen with more recent tin when they get scarce enough to be slightly interesting!

Twingos will always been an unusual sight here - were they ever officially imported to the UK?

If you had asked me this question a while ago, then I would have said 'The first of something that starts a trend,' eg A Chrysler Voyager or VW Golf. Now, I'm not so sure any more!

Maybe modern cars are to much alike to have the character of old cars, so maybe none of todays vehicles will be classics in the future. Maybe todays generation will be so scared of getting dirty hands, they wont dare to try to keep an old car on the road. Maybe they will look on computers or Play Stations as something to collect?

Then again, if you look around, things like Trabants are becoming collectors items....so maybe it will just be the rubbish that become collectable...maybe even the 'V' word car!!! Laughing

I meant it as a complement.

Somebody told me the other day that we were in the 21st century....shouldn't the 20th have come before that?

I really want a top hat, and a morning suit, was thinking it would be perfect to wear, walking with a cane, then jump on the PF!

I am keeping an eye on ebay!

Hi Buzzy

Every year there's a Victorian weekend at Erddig near Wrexham, that isn't too far from you is it? Last year there was someone with a penny-farthing; I think his was a reproduction too. Anyway he was dressed like a cross between Sherlock Holmes and the gamekeeper from Lady Chatterley's Lover Very Happy Perhaps that should be the look to aim for Wink BTW this year's is August 4th and 5th.

Hi

Ah right, I will have to try and get over to see that, if I am not booked up show wise, I know that I have been asked to ride the PF in the potteries in august at some point, should be fun, it is something to do with the museum, so should be a laugh!

Thanks for sharing the wrexham thing with me, I will have to research it, I know there is a victorian festival in Llandudno and want to go there either with the PF, if I can arrange transport or just to look around, and there is on normally at the tramway museum nr Matlock at some point!

Cheers

How about the hot Hatches? Many of which have been 'boyracered' and few good originals probably remain.
Renault 5 GT Turbo
Mk2 Golf GTi
VW Corrado
Vauxhall Nova SR
Peugot 205 GTi

Just a few that spring to mind
