In one of my many pauses for thought during the day, my mind began to drift onto the subject of memorable drives - not so much disasters, but drives where everything just slotted into place - good car to drive, minimal traffic, good weather, good reliability etc etc
Not really in a classic I know, but one memorable blast I had was in my old 900 turbo on the A5 in N Wales (probably littered with speed cameras now), didn't really go too quick but it was a fab drive with very little traffic around, lovely weather etc etc.
One of the most expensive & memorable runs was a long weekend at the Goodwood Revival a few years ago in my Series 1 XJ12L, over the 4 days I think I must have spent around £170 in fuel, but it was a blast and will be remembered for a long time seen below, with dad's S3 V12:

That is one of the pleasures of driving here, very little traffic, and without even speeding, to be able to keep a respectable average....
Curiously though, if I think of my most memorable drives since I moved here, they've almost always been outside of the country, and nine times out of ten on a motorbike.....

Bank holiday weekend we took the Lotus up to Hexham.
The run back down the A686 to Altson and then the A689 into Teesside was excellent.
Can't claim total reliability however, the passenger side wheel bearing made a horrid grinding noise as we left the petrol station near home.
Since changed and all OK again.
Scarborough via Whitby tomorrow I think. |
