Brian, Rick... anybody
Has anybody heard anything about the “European Classic Caravan Reunion” that was recently held in Holland, I would dearly like to see some photos of the vans it attracted.
I can’t find any reference to it on the WWW, maybe one of the Caravan magazines will eventually have an article about it

Had a quick look around the European Classic Caravan Club sites and found just five pics of the recent meeting. It does seem that the owners are not very computer literate as each year it takes several months for photos to appear on the net.
You can find them at:
http://www.oldtimercaravanclub.nl/
click on the "Slagharen" link at the bottom of the page.
Knowing of your interest in European Caravans you might like to look at:
http://www.caravan-museum.de/
where you can find a massive collection of photos of mainly German caravans.
As to it appearing in magazines - a few years ago a freelance journalist from the UK was commissioned to attend the event and I spent a lot of time with him during the meeting. The result was two paragraphs and one picture in a modern caravanning magazine! |

Brian,
Thanks for those links mate, I will work my way through the second one when time permits (I keep getting into trouble for spending too much time on this “silly computer” during the day... life’s tough ).
Many of the photos of caravans I have looked at so far on that site have that frustrating habit of not showing the tow bar coupling ( I have a thing about tow bar couplings ) but there are many interesting caravan designs.
I’m afraid I will have to use Google’s translation tool often .
Thanks again,
Cobber. |

Not many share your fascination with the dirty greasy lump of iron at the front of our caravans, from the sixties onwards British manufacturers went to great lengths to cover them in fibreglass extensions to the front box!
But to get you all excited I have found a couple of exploded parts diagrams of tow hitches!
This is the type fitted to my Safari
This is a slightly later type with the pressed hitch instead of cast iron.
These come from a site that is invaluable in keeping old caravans in good order

Sorry if giving you another link causes you yet more trouble! |

Thanks Brian,
As you may be aware my tow coupling fetish started when I acquired ol’ 36 :
http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/forum/phpbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2444&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
It has a “Brockhouse” coupling which is one of the items that helped me date the van and cause me to think maybe the van came from “The Mother Country”.
It has the “Brockhouse House” coupling patent # GB410095 which was published in 1934, although mine has the “Improvements in, or relating to, couplings for trailing vehicles” application date 1935. It does not have the improvement that was applied for in 1939.
All of that makes me believe it is a 1936 model as claimed by the bloke I bought it from.
I know of nobody else in Oz who has a “Brockhouse” coupling fitted to their caravan.
All of this smart Alec knowledge comes from the wonderful site at
http://v3.espacenet.com/pdfdoc?DB=EPODOC&IDX=GB452222&F=0&QPN=GB452222&
The coupling referred to is this one .....
I thought it wise to modify it by fitting a hand brake, it didn't have one, just as it doesn't have a brake blocking device when reversing.
I read somewhere that the regulations in the U.K required the fitting of over-ride brakes on vans weighing over 2cwt, is that still the case ?
Don't worry about getting me into trouble Brian, I live dangerously most of the time
